Down on the Farm: 7/16/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies were idle.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Binghampton Mets 9-3:

Javier Herrera(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 1 BB.  BA= .300.
Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 3, BB, Sac.  BA= .251.
Mark Minicozzi(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .334.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .218.
Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .292.
Ryan Lollis(CF)- 2 for 5.  BA= .272.
Chris Gloor(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.55.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 9.95.

Herrera is a guy whose prior pedigree and tools might just trump his advanced age, although his experience is undoubtedly a factor in his success at this level.  Mark Mincozzi is a guy with very limited tools who is succeeding because he has more experience than the competition.  Panik needs to build on the last two games in which he has 2 hits each.  Hopefully this appearance will stabilize Osich after a couple of very ugly ones.

High A  San Jose Giants were idle.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes pounded the Eugene Emeralds 8-2:

Brandon Bednar(DH)- 1 for 3, HR(2), SF.  BA= .295.
Jeremy Sy(SS)- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .272.
Brian Ragira(1B)- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .345.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 2 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .280.
Eugene Escalante(C)- 2 for 3.  BA= .279.
Ryan Jones(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .438.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.65.
Jake Smith(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.87.

Ragira is quietly raking.  Should have more than 1 HR though.  Love what Shilo McCall is doing against mostly older competition.  Leenhouts has 13 K's against 0 BB's in his last 15 IP.  His relatively advanced age is mitigated by his size, lefthandedness and short experience in pro ball.  Unlikely to be in impact starter, but I could see him eventually becoming a solid lefthanded relief specialist.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.

DSL  Giants defeated the Twins 3-2:

Robinson Medrano(RF, 17 yo)- 2 for 4.  BA= .274.
Jonathan Loaisiga(RHP, 18 yo)- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.21.
Reymi Rodriguez(RHP, 18 yo)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.17.

  1. Minicozzi is a very interesting story actually. He's come back from wrist, back and TJ surgery, played independent ball (3 stops) and talked his way onto the Richmond squad. He's a total longshot, but he's grinding away. He was MVP of the Nicaraguan league, which might have something to do with the Gints giving him the shot. I love that this organization gives guys like these the shot.

Totally agree on Ragira. I'm very curious if the Giants will try him in the OF or he's just a 1B.

Robinson Medrano makes hay again. Love the name.

    1. Yeah, Gustavo and Javier made all the signing headlines, but this Medrano character is outperforming both of them at the same age, and by a pretty big margin. He's got some size to dream on too.

    2. Any idea why Gustavo hasn't played in a couple of weeks lately? Doesn't show that he's injured...

    3. I think he got HBP. Hope he is OK. Getting DSL news is tough, even with a bonus baby.

    4. Speaking of injuries, does anyone know what happened to Hunter Strickland? He's been injured since around the end of May, May 23rd was his last appearance. I tried looking for info on him but all I could find was a reference to him being injured (but not with what) and thus unable to partipate in the CAL All-Star game even though he was selected.

    5. Hunter Strickland had Tommy John. It was mentioned in the sfgate blog when reporters asked about the decision to DFA Heston when freeing up a 40 man spot for Francoeur. John Barr felt there was nobody else they could drop. I would have dropped Adrianza, but the giants like their defense and putting hunter strickland on the 60 day dl would have meant activating him and starting his clock. Never knew about that little tidbit about the 60 day DL.

  2. Great interview by the guy panned by Moneyball who is actually the architect for all the success behind those teams: Grady Fuson, the salty scout who gets fired by genius Beane: http://www.athleticsnation.com/2013/7/15/4524456/down-on-the-farm-gradys-take-on-as-top-prospects

Drafted Chavez/Hudson/Mulder/Zito. But lets not bother with actually writing about those cats Michael Lewis. Naw, its a Hattaberg/Bradford world.

Anyways, the A's have been doing some great drafting lately, I think its a great read.

  3. Oh Moneyball, what an overrated flick... Tejada, Chavez, the Big 3... real fans know why that team was special.
