Down on the Farm: 6/3/2013

AAA  Las Vegas 51's dominated the Fresno Grizzlies 8-0:

Chris Dominguez(3B-1B)- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .278.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.57.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A  San Jose Giants blanked the Modesto Nuts 5-0:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .264.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .248.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(7).  BA= .234.
Jason Forjet(RHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.74.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.27.

What is impressing me about Angel V is it's not just HR's.  He's also hitting a lot of singles and doubles in the process.  As ogc has pointed out.  Take out his first 10 games of the season and he is hitting for a nice BA too.  Jason Forjet had a poor K rate his first 2 appearances, but picked up that part of his game in this one.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets had the day off.

DSL  Giants topped the Twins 7-6:

Gustavo Cabrera(CF, 17 yo)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .111.
Emmanuel Hernandez(1B, 19 yo)- 2 for 5. BA= .400.
Nathanael Javier(3B, 17 yo)- 2 for 4.  BA= .273.
Jean Angomas(RF, 18 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.
Richard Rodriguez(2B, 20 yo)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .167.
Shawn Gomez(RHP, 18 yo)- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.60.

Gustavo gets his first professional hit and keeps drawing walks.  Javier is off to a decent start to his pro career.  I like Shawn Gomez' size at 6'4", 180 lbs.  Don't know anything else about him.  He had 21 K's against 8 BB's in 25 IP last season as a 17 yo.

  1. The Giants protected AV on the 40. Looks like that was an astute move. Good for GUSTAVO. Looks like Cabrera is going to set the table and Javier will clean that thing up this year. Its nice to have big name prospects to follow in the DSL.

After we get done with this June 6-8 draft we can start guessing on what the Gints will do on the IFA front with their 1.9MM Selig bucks.

Its interesting, all that "amazing SJ rotation" and lookee here, its Justin Forjet, our late round sleeper, throwing down. Cody Hall has been pitching quite well. A twin tandem of Hall/Osich is a pretty sweet closing duo.

    1. I think protecting AV on the 40 was the obvious move by the Giants, so I don't view it as astute.

Most teams have at least one spot either open or held by a prospect that they don't necessarily think is a true prospect, but they keep them around, just in case, as they might lose the guy otherwise. So it was minimal cost to the Giants to keep him on the 40.

On top of that, AV, before his career went off track, was a Top 40 prospect overall per BA's rank that pre-season. He probably would have fell some after the season without the murder charge, but, to me, his down season seemed more related to some injury as he dominated the league in early part of the season in Advanced A ball (.313/.348/.484/.832 to June 2nd), before struggling his last month before his season was shut down due to his leg injury. Given that type of potential before, the Giants had to keep him around, just in case he returned to his former goodness. And so far, so good.

    2. Putting Angel Villalona on the 40 man roster was not an obvious move.

    3. It was a no risk move to place him on the 40 man, while it gives you the opportunity to let him play and show whether he still had the top prospect skills that he showed at age 18 in the low minors, and yet most prospect experts thought that skill potential was so good that even though he was in the low minors he was a considered a top prospect in all of baseball.

It costed very little to place him on the 40 to find out whether AnVil still had that potential in him, low cost/risk, high return if he maintained enough of his skills, and he was just 22 YO now, plenty of time to still develop if his skills are still there.

    4. 1. It puts a time clock on his future development

      2. It takes up a slot on the 40 man roster.

It is not a no-risk move.

    5. 1. OK, no-risk was hyperbole, my original thought was minimal risk. It was either that or risk losing him on the Rule 5 Draft, and you know somebody would have taken him. If a team can pay Melky $16M for 2 seasons, somebody is going to draft him, particularly one of the teams that like the Giants leftovers, Pirates, Astros, Mets, Padres, LAD, A's. It was either clock him or lose him now.

      2. Taking up a slot on the 40 man is risky if it forces out somebody who could still be a good player. We have enough slots that we've carried an injured MI this whole season, plus brought up a couple of guys onto the 40 man. I don't recall losing anyone important last season either.

    6. I do not know someone would have taken him. Remember, in the Rule 5 draft, you have to keep the player on the 25 man roster all season or offer him back. Here's a guy who had been out of baseball for 2+ years up to his neck in legal problems and no visa to the USA. Do you really think some team out there was going to take him in the Rule 5 draft and then keep him on the 25 man roster all season? I don't think that is a foregone conclusion at all!

I looked up Jean Angomas last night, and it appears that he is a significant prospect and something more than the average DSL'er.

Here's what I could find on RHP Raffi Vizcaino
      http://dplbaseball.com/dpl-news/louisville-slugger-tournament-series-recap/
"Eligible pitchers Jonathan Hernandez-RHP, Kelyn Jose-LHP and Raffi Vizcaino-RHP had very good outings 89-92mph aggressive in the zone and showing quality stuff."
