Game Wrap 6/21/2013: Marlins 6 Giants 3

Tim Lincecum had a Quality Start and actually pitched a pretty darn good game except for 2 horrible pitches to Logan Morrison, but the Giants collapsed in the 8'th inning into a steaming pile of frustration, losing their 9'th game in a row to these Marlins in AT&T Park.  Key Lines:

Gregor Blanco- 3 for 5, SB(9).  BA= .293.  Nice article about Blanco on Fangraphs today.  Turned his career around by having surgery on a chronically injured wrist and ditching the choke-up on the bat and swinging with more authority.  Sounds like a similar formula to the one Torres used.  Scutaro and Posey went a combined 1 for 10 in this one, so Blanco only got 1 run scored out of this effort.

Hunter Pence- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .290.  The double was a towering pop-up to CF that Ozuna whiffed on.  It came with 2 outs, so Posey was running from 1B on the pitch and just kept going all the way home.

Andres Torres- 2 for 2, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .270.  Torres was having himself a pretty good night until he made a terrible decision to try to stretch a ball off the RF wall into a triple.  Ozuna came over from CF to get the long rebound and he has a cannon for an arm.  Nailed Torres by a mile and Andres came out of the game with a bruised knee.

Tim Lincecum- 7 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.52.  Timmy made 2 mistakes, both to Logan Morrison.  I'll forgive him for the first one, a high fastball that LoMo jacked out of the park.  I'm not sure how Timmy could have thought trying that again in the 6'th was a good idea.  That one got whacked up Triples Alley for, well, a triple!  Morrison later scored to tie it up and you pretty much knew how this one was going to turn out at that point.

You know things are getting strange when, for the second night in a row, the winning rally involved a hit batter followed by an opposite-field single by Marcel Ozuna who looks like he has a clue out there in addition to terrific tools.  Oh, and isn't there a rule that says a batter has to try to get out of the way in order to take 1B on a HBP?  Not only did Stanton not try, he actually swung at the pitch!  I seem to remember that Vogie did not get to take first base when he swung at the pitch that hit him in the identical spot.

With the Loss, the Giants fell to 3 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs who battered Cincinnati 11-5.  The Pesky Padres moved ahead of the Giants into 2'nd place, 2.5 games back, with a 5-2 win over the Last Place Dodgers who fell to 9.5 games off the pace.  The Rockies lost to the Nationals 2-1 to remain in 4'th place, 4 games behind the leaders.

Barry Zito tries to break the Marlins' hex tomorrow afternoon facing rookie RHP Jacob Turner.
