Down on the Farm: 6/2/2013

AAA  Las Vegas 51's edged the Fresno Grizzlies 3-2 in 10 innings:

Austin Fleet(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

No Grizzlies got more than 1 hit.  Is Fleet pitching himself into the mix for Giants emergency starters?

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Erie Seawolves 5-4 in 10 innings:

Joe Panik(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1), BB.  BA= .290.
Javier Herrera(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .312.
Mark Minicozzi(3B-2B)- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .354.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .210.
Jarrett Parker(PH-RF)- 1 for 1, HR(11), HBP.  BA= .258.
Chris Gloor(LHP)- 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.08.

Love what Panik is doing in the EL this year.  Maybe he will pick up the power a bit now?  5 QS in a row now for Chris Gloor after just 1 in his first 4 starts.

High A  Stockton Ports defeated the San Jose Giants 6-3:

Brock Bond(3B)- 0 for 1, 3 BB, SB(3).  BA= .222.
Devin Harris(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(12), BB.  BA= .264.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.02.

Brock Bond doing his thing the gritty way.  This was better than Blach's last start.  Peripherals still looking good, though.

Low A  Charleston River Dogs pounded the Augusta Greenjackets 8-2:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 1 for 4, 2 SB(29).  BA= .297.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .231.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .221.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 5 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 3.77.

Peripherals look OK for Stratton, but that is a lot of hits to give up!

DSL  Padres beat the Giants 8-3:

Hengerber Medina(SS, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(1).  BA= .125.
Natanial Javier(3B, 17 yo)- 0 for 3, BB, SF.  BA= .143.
Gustavo Cabrera(CF, 17 yo)- 0 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .000.
Cesar Yanez(RHP, 18 yo)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.38.
Reymi Rodriguez(RHP, 18 yo)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Yep!  The DSL is rolling.  The big gun signings, Gustavo Cabrera and Natanial Javier are there.  I am surprised to see Hengerber back.  I really thought he would be promoted to Arizona this year. Hey!  Gustavo has drawn 2 BB's against 1 K so far.  It's never too early to be searching for positives!  LOL!

  1. Doc!

Sounds like you had a great time up north. I've been living in SoCal the last 3 years (UCLA) after growing up in the East Bay, but I'm finally moving up to Cupertino this summer for a job in the Si-Valley. Your ramblings had me reminiscing and thinking of the possibilities of being back up there all Summer!

As for baseball, despite the hardships this season, I don't know what more we could have asked for as Giants fans: 2 WS championships, Buster Posey, the "Greatest Show on the Mound" (2010 - 2012), plus Craw-daddy, Scoots, Panda & all the rest. That they're in a world of hurt now makes me think no less of our great organization. Further, I've loved watching the developments this spring in prospecting.

Some of the guys I'm very high on right now are...well, Panik #1, clearly...but also Jesus Gallindo, Roger Kieschnick and Chris Gloor. Gloor had some hype as a sleeper when he got here...then had some serious troubles with the BB. However, hard throwing lefties (a la Sanchez) really don't get old if they start putting it together, even late. Care to share some thoughts on these few kids? I'm interested in what folks think about each of their respective ceilings.

For myself, I think people significantly under-rate Roger K. He's been very impressive every year, with the one injury caveat. Healthy, I don't see any reason to label the kid as a reserve OF as opposed to a middle-order guy, with a plus-arm from left or right field. I just get the sense that he's not a Bowker retread (maybe it's that great baseball name..).

Anyways, cheers on the blog. Your absence made it very clear how much I love what happens here.

    1. Thanks, Rainball!

We've seen a lot of slap and dash guys impress in the low minors only to be exposed at higher levels. Galindo might be the guy who breaks through, but will have to prove it at higher levels. I'd like to see Roger K get a serious chance somewhere, somehow. I agree he has always performed well when healthy. Chris Gloor seems to be a marginal guy who does not throw quite as hard as his size might lead you to believe. Again, he'll have to prove himself at every step, but don't they all?

    2. Nuts, I really thought Gloor had a heavy fastball to go with that great frame and size of his. Well, that takes away a bit of the mistique he had going, since he's been moving relatively slow to boot.

And for sure, the singles-hitting guys always have a tougher time at the higher levels, but the speed is outstanding. However, looks like both Gloor and Gallindo (as well as Roger K) are not as young as I may have thought..each repeating a league currently. We'll see what the baseball Gods have in store for each.

I'll still put my money on the big bopper, Kieschnick.

    3. This reminds me: a fan contributor wrote an article about Antoan Richardson for yahoo!. He wanted the Brewers to call him up to get some obp and speed in the lead-off spot. I guess you never know where you'll find the next Torres or Blanco.

Antoan had 66 steals for Augusta. Beat that Jesus.

Galindo had some injury last year and got himself stuck in Augusta after a mediocre half-season. I think he may have derailed his prospect status, and he'll have to show the brass something special to get promoted. And a promotion is what he desperately needs if he is to make the bigs with the Giants, and not get his first hit for some other organization and hope for a call-up with a Brewer-like team in 2018.

  2. Welcome home, glad you had a great time.

Eventually GUSTAVO will get a hit. Sort of surprised about Medina as well, but he is pretty young. Nice to have the DSL for a different look at the minors. And to watch Gustavo and Javier, and the pitchers they signed.

The Richmond crew has been fun this year. Good for Ricky O. Panik starts down a power streak? That'll mess up his utility guy label. Can't happen.

I'm with RainBall on Roger K. He has had injury stumbles, but he is very well thought of by the Braintrust. I think his chance is going to come pretty quick now. If he can push through the K's like Goldschmidt did...
