Game Wrap 5/6/2022: Cardinals 3 Giants 2

The Giants managed to keep this one close but the end result was their 5'th loss in a row as the lineup continued to struggle.

Alex Cobb RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 4.80.  Those are dominant numbers.  The Giants just aren't going to win many games when the SP giving up a run or 2 always gives the other team a lead.  But it does bode well for the future that Cobb was back in form after failing to get out of the first inning in his last start coming off the IL.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 2/0.  ERA= 0.00.  Hjelle makes his MLB debut after being essentially written off by a lot of prospect watchers this offseason.  He looked terrific getting the extreme downward plane on his pitches as advertised resulting in a K and two very soft contact grounders in a clean inning.  It's unclear what role awaits Hjelle going forward or how long he'll be on the active roster, but that stuff should give him sustainable play in the major leagues.

It's Buster Posey Day and Logan Webb Day today as Webb tries to stop the bleeding in a 4:15 PM game.

  1. Before their May 7th game last year, the Giants were 18-13, albeit in 1st place, but they really didn't look like the team they would become.
At 14-12 now, they have lost the magic they had 10 days ago, losing 7 of 8.
    Which way will they go?
They have a very tough schedule for the next 17 games, playing teams with better records: Cardinals (5), Rockies (6), Padres (3), and Mets (3).
By May 27th when the Giants open a series in Cincinnati with a team hopefully restored to strength, there most likely will be an answer: hopeful or hopeless?

Interestingly, today, all 5 teams in the NL West are above .500 — only 1 other division has as many as 3, a couple only have 1.
