Game Wrap 5/13/2022: Giants 8 Cardinals 2

Logan Webb RHP kept the Cardinals lineup in check long enough for the lineup to build a lead, then the Giants broke it open in the 8'th inning for a win that was tougher than the final score might lead you to believe.

Lamonte Wade Jr RF- 0 for 0, 2BB, HBP.  BA= .333.  Lamonte just says no to bad pitches.  Austin Slater PH for Lamonte against a LHP and drew a walk so the leadoff spot reached base 4 times without a hit.

Mike Yastrzemski CF/RF- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, HBP.  BA= .273.  YtY drove in the go-ahead runs in the third inning with a 2-out double that Harrison Bader came this close to catching in the L-CF alley.

Luis Gonzalez LF- 2 for 3.  BA= .328.  So far, LuGone looks like a significantly better hitter than Steven Duggar, although it's a SSS and Duggar had his hot streaks.  The glove, though, has been rough and nowhere near what Duggar gives you on D.

Evan Longoria PH/3B- 1 for 1, 2B. BA= .167.  Longo gets his first hit of the season in PH role and drove in 2 runs in the Giants add-on 8'th inning.

Curt Casali C- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .256.  If the Giants lineup was not giving them the luxury of developing Joey Bart at the MLB level, we might say the Giants should make Casali the official starting catcher and bring in a veteran backup, but they do have that luxury.

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 3.48.  We lost power at our house after the second inning and it didn't come back on until the 7'th so I missed most of Webb's high wire act.  It's a rough line from an advanced stats perspective but two GIDP's helped.  Webb seemed to have a particular challenge commanding his changeup which kept Casali busy blocking scuds.

Gotta confess I am not clear on how the DFA/Waiver system works but Tyler Beede RHP was claimed by the Pirates and the Giants were not able to swing a trade, so Beede is now a Pirate.  I am disappointed his Giants career ended like this and wish him the best...except when he faces the Giants!  As someone said on Twitter, who knows?  Maybe someday Beede will be pitching somewhere in winter ball and the Dodgers will offer him......you know the rest of the story.

  1. Yaz returning to form is the biggest thing that could happen to this lineup IMO

  2. I should add the Dodgers lost and the Padres won so the NL West Standings are: 1. Dodgers 20-11, .645, ***. 2. Padres 21-12, .636, ***. 3. Giants 20-12, .625, 0.5. Dodgers have lost 3 in a row. Kershaw hits the IL with SI joint inflammation.

  3. Again, the Pirates reclaim a young Giants pitcher. The first two (Crick and Stratton) worked out well for them. Remember when Sabes used to pry talent from Pittsburgh? How the times have changed.

    1. The Giants just ran out of time with Beede. Maybe Zaidi's development team could've fixed him if he wasn't out for a year with Tommy John, but we'll never know. Overall, it's probably a good indication of the Giants depth if talent is being poached off the waiver wire from them, while it provides an example of how rebuilding teams can afford to offer roster spots to former top prospects to see if they can strike gold. I wish him luck and look forward to him coming back to the Giants in 5 years to help them win a World Series.

  4. Mauricio Dubon has been traded. Traded to the Astros for a catcher named Micheal Papierski. I am a bit shocked as although Dubon has his warts, he has been playing well lately. I guess with Tommy LaStella appearing ready, the Giants needed to make room. I enjoyed watching Dubon play. As Kapler said last week, when Dubon is hitting, it makes the Giants a much better team.

    1. Wow! Can't say I was expecting that, but it kind of makes sense. I like Dubon a lot and he's had his moments but Thairo Estrada plays the same role and has been a more consistent performer. With Tommy La Stella apparently coming back soon, something had to give and FZ probably didn't want to let Dubon go with nothing in return as happened with Tyler Beede. And of course, you can never have too much catching!
