Game Wrap 5/5/2022: Cardinals 7 Giants 1

When I was a kid, there was a playground song we used to sing that went "....same song next verse, could get better but it's gonna get worse."   That song reached verse four for the Giants last night with their fourth straight loss involving 3 teams.  Their composite score for those 4 games is 30-8, 19-3 over their last 3 games.

Bright spots were 2 hit games from Mike Yastrzemski CF, Wilmer Flores 1B and Luis Gonzalez RF, and Gonzalez might be in the process of winning a permanent roster spot as he is hitting .333 so far.  It's super important for YtY to get back to where he was pre-COVID too.

I have always said if you use enough relievers in one game, at least one will eventually poop the bed.  This time it was Jake McGee LHP(again) giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in 0.2 IP, which broke the game open for the Cardinals.  Tyler Rogers RHP followed with 2 more hits and a run allowed before finally getting out of the 7'th inning.  Speaking of permanent roster spots, Mauricio Llovera RHP pitched a perfect first inning and now has a 2.25 ERA in 4 IP with 5 K's.  I also think I heard Flem and Kruk say Gregory Santos RHP(yes, he got called up) hit 100 MPH with his FB during 1.2 scoreless IP.

Alex Cobb RHP will try to be the Stopper tonight facing a Cardinals bullpen game opened by fireballer John Hicks RHP.  It's just that it's a bit tough to be a Stopper when your team is scoring 1 run per game like the Giants over their last 3.

The Tyler Beede RHP era apparently ended before it really began, albeit not for lack of trying.  Beede's recent appearances were not terrible but they weren't good either, and showed no signs of getting better.  That earned him a DFA and the talk sounded like he'll most likely be pitching for another organization in a few days.  I fully expect to see him in an opposing uniform throwing goose eggs at the Giants in the not-too-distant future.

  1. Per Beede, you have to remember that he's a pre FZ draft pick. After his TJ surgery, there was no way that the organization was going to give him much rope to get his feet back under him. I fear that they might have the same patience for other pre FZ picks. Villar has earned a callup, yet he remains in AAA. I fear for what this means for people l like Ramos. He already semi proved himself on the big team earlier this season. And yet he's languishing in AAA. Call up the kids of the future, already. Can't be worse than what we currently have.

    1. Kap and FZ gave Beede multiple appearances while rosters were at 28 to get it together. I understand why there needs to be limits on option years but this is case where it seems to work against both parties. Who knows? Maybe Beede gets through waivers and accepts assignment to keep working on his post TJ command issues.

    2. On the up side, they did think enough to recall Hjelle. Perhaps he'll be starting on Sunday.

  2. SSS, but Beede's WHIP is over 2 this year. 6 Walks in 9.2 innings. WHIP is over 1.5 for his career. He walked 45(!!) in 48.2 innings in AAA last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if another club takes a flyer on him, but he's always struggled with command (Pre & Post TJ). Giants have not been able to fix this. It's been almost 8 years since he was drafted. Out of college. How can you hand the ball to a guy every 5th day who struggles this much with command?

If the roster issue hadn't forced the Giants hand on this, I think they would have continued to work with him. It's tantalizing to think what he can be. But he's not there and the Giants are trying to win now. There's no room for him on the MLB roster.

  3. I'm not a huge fan of YtY batting lead off still. Luis Gonzalez should hit the 2 spot, since he can hit all fields and see better pitches hitting behind YtY
