Game Wrap 9/4/2019: Giants 9 Cardinals 8

Madison Bumgarner got knocked around for 6 runs in 5 innings and the bullpen faltered again, but Kevin Pillar capped a prodigious offense with a gargantuan blast to LF in the 8'th inning and Will Smith held on to save the game.  I gotta say, just the fact this Giants team is capable of winning games like this with some regularity make this season a lot of fun to watch.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski LF/RF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(19).  BA= .271.  YtY is riding another hot streak hitting .333 with 2 HR's in his last 7 games.  He is 4'th in OPS among NL Rookies with more than 300 PA's.

Buster Posey C- 3 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .257.  Buster reaches base 5 times and scores one run.  He is hitting .300 with 9 singles in 30 AB over his last 7 games.

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 4, HR(11), BB.  BA= .229.  Crawford's 3-run dinger gave the Giants a short-lived 7-4 lead in the 6'th inning.  Despite the HR, he's hitting just .143 over his last 7 games, but .292 over his last 15.

Kevin Pillar CF- 4 for 5, HR(21).  BA= .262.  Pillar continues his career year in front of our eyes.  When he came to the plate with a runner on in the 8'th and the Giants trailing by a run, I was actually pretty confident he was going to hit a HR.  He's been that good in the clutch this season.

Jaylin Davis RF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .333.  A successful MLB debut for Jaylin Davis who got the call up earlier in the day.  His first career hit was the IF variety, but I'm sure he's very pleased with it.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.81.  When I looked up Gameday as I left work, I was Bummy was perfect through 6 innings but had 0 K's.  I've learned that is not a good sign ever since I listened to a game in the 60's where Juan Marichal was perfect through 6 innings but with 0 K's then got shelled for something like 6 runs in the 7'th inning.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.59.  Rogers gave up a 2-run double to Paul Goldschmidt upon entering the game in the 6'th but then got through the 7'th without any further damage.  His GO/AO is 4.0 through his first 5 MLB appearances.

Tony Watson LHP- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.33.  Watson bruised his left wrist making a diving tag on Kolton Wong at 1B in the 8'th inning. No word on X-ray results.

Will Smith LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, Save(31).  ERA= 2.90.  Smith gets the 4-out Save, the 3'rd time he has gone more than 1 IP this season out of 57 appearances.

Logan Webb takes on fellow rookie Dakota Hudson, who has been around a bit longer, trying to salvage a tie in the 4-game series today.

  1. For > 145 PA (to include Dickerson @ 147), Slater is:
    OPS 2nd (to Dickerson)
    SLG 3rd (Dickerson, Yastrzemsko)
    BA 3rd (Solano, Dickerson)
    OBP 1st
WAR 5th (much fewest PAs among leaders)
PA 12th -- Brought up July 1st to be part of that 19-6 month (.270/.370/.524/.894 in July, Giants 18-5 in his games, 12-1 in his starts)
    He plays good D, OF, 1st, 2nd.
In Giants last 9 games, he's started twice.

  2. On the radio Fleming was suggesting that if Longo had made a clean pick up of a weak
groundball to 3rd the inning would have been over. Next batter Kolten Wong bloops a hit
to center. Bum is agitated and walks the next batter. All three scored!!

I would like to see a clean fielding third baseman next year on this team.

  3. Certainly Bumgarner will get a QO, but he would be foolish not to test the market.
If they really want him, the Giants "could" outbid all competitors plus everyone else is facing a lost draft pick.
OTOH, not sure why he wouldn't sign with Atlanta if they want him (and they should).
Yesterday was the 200th game for Bumgarner and Posey together in SF (plus they spent some time in San Jose and Fresno in 2009 and 2010). Will that play a part? Bochy's leaving, will that play a part?
IMO, it won't come down to money -- that's not Madison Bumgarner: he wants to play for a winner.
