I apologize for an inappropriate choice of words in responding to a comment about Evan Longoria. I went back and edited my response with more appropriate wording. I do still strongly disagree with the comment and have to say I am frustrated by what seems to be a prevalent attitude toward Longo which I believe is demonstrably untrue and unfair to him. fWAR is not a perfect metric for either offense or defense but it's a whole lot better than judging defense on one play of questionable difficulty. In addition, my own eyeball test agrees with fWAR that Longo is a good defensive 3B for whom it would be extremely difficult to find a better replacement. I still believe the comment was a cheap shot which is why it drew such a strong reaction which I now regret.
Look, I am not crazy about his contract either, especially the length. If Zaidi can trade him over the winter, he probably should but if not, Bobby Evans was able to whittle the contract down enough in the trade that it's not even close to being an albatross contract and never will be. Longo has arguably been the Giants best player this season and continues to be one of the top defensive 3B in baseball. I will not allow my blog to become a forum for bashing any player let alone one who might be the best player on the roster.

I started the trade Longo dialogue-
ReplyDeleteNo issue with your comments, and I don't dislike Longo. I just don't see him as part of the long term plans, I would rather gift him away then let his production fall of a cliff where we are stuck with him. Team is a couple years away from being a true contender, move him while we still can. He's doing fine now which is why we can move him
Well said Doc!

Of all the sabermetric stats the Defensive WAR seems like the most vague and difficult to calculate. I am skeptical of any stat that has an outfielder like Jason Hayward as the highest defensive WAR player over much more difficult positions like SS, C, or 3B. I don’t think anyone is trying to “bash” Longo but if you watch him play it is pretty obvious that his range and arm strength aren’t what they used to be. He has also made some noticeable errors on routine plays which tend to skew ones opinion admittedly more than they should when looking at the overall body of work. I think his age and likely continued decline as he gets older needs to be a factor as well when considering him at 3B going forward. He has been one of the best 3B over the last few years but the operative words in that sentence is “has been”. To predict no decline as he gets older isn’t realistic and that isnt to say he can’t be an above average 1B and continue to age well with the bat. The bat is the last skill to erode IMO
ReplyDeleteRagging on Longoria and talking of a trade are both nonsense: he earned his keep this year but he'll be 34 next month and unlikely to get any better as his pay goes up. He is a sunk cost but is a better glove than the Giants will have for several more years. He would have to be traded with money attached and then who plays 3B?
ReplyDeleteThe most absurd part of the criticism is that it's based on something Dave Fleming said! Where did he play?
Anthony Rendon plays 3B...
DeleteDan Winkler is signed thru 2019, 1 yr @ $1.61M & Arb Eligible in 2020.
ReplyDeleteHe's doing well for Sacramento helping to nail down the win yesterday.
Perhaps Zaidi has decided his fate for next year and doesn't need to see him pitch for the Giants but given the state of the tired and and ailing BP now, IMO he should be retained and will necessarily get a raise.
Sacramento may need him now but it looks like the Giants do also.
Melancon's $14M next year more than covers Longoria in 2020 plus the Giants got a couple good arms.
Longo is like 19th in WAR and 18th in OPS for 3B. Solid player, but fall from one of the elite 3Bs today. He is only going to fall down the list the next few years. Do you want to be strapped to the 25th best 3B in a couple years with that contract?
ReplyDeleteYou can (1) pay him to play or (2) pay him not to play.
DeleteIn case (2) think Red Sox and Pablo.
If he's not worth his contract for the Giants, he's not worth his contract anywhere, because the Giants don't have a 3Bman so he has that value for SF -- and even not hitting, he's elite in teh field and he a solid team type guy.
There are much bigger holes to fill for 2020 than 3rd base, like think starting pitcher and maybe relief and maybe backup catcher.
Mets are going to move ahead of the Phillies this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHope Bryce enjoys watching Washington, Atlanta, and some team not from Philadelphia in the playoffs.
Oh, but the Phillies are going to get better.
So are 6 other teams!
Read somewhere -- maybe McCChron -- the the Dodgers are the best team in baseball and hence will sweep the Giants this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHaven't the streaking Dodgers been the best team in baseball since 2013?
2018: lost to Red Sox in WS
2017: Lost to Astros in WS
2016: lost to Cubs in NLCS
2015: lost to Mets in NLDS
2014: lost to Cardinals in NLDS
2013: lost to Cardinals in NLCS
2010-2012: did not finish
2009: lost NLCS to Phillies in NLCS
2008: lost NLCS to Phillies in NLCS
Although they have become adept at Dodg-ing championships, they could go back to one of their earlier names like the 1988 Bridegrooms!
