Game Wrap 9/1/2019: Padres 8 Giants 4

2-run HR's by Kevin Pillar and Evan Longoria were not enough to overcome one of those starts by Jeff Samardzija.  Key Lines:

Dovovan Solano 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .339.   The BABIP is unsustainable but Solano is keeping the ball off the ground(GO/AO= 0.71) and seeing more Pitches/PA(4.0) than he has in his career.  Kruk commented on how he is grinding out AB's.  His LD%(35.5) and Hard%(38.8) are also the highest of his career so the BABIP is not a complete fluke.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 4, HR(20).  BA= .260.  Pillar reaches 20 HR's and is enjoying the peak year of his career so far, set to top his career high in multiple offensive categories.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 4, HR(18).  BA= .266.  Longo is hitting .340 in the second half.  Q for those of you favoring trading Longo over the winter:  Who do you see taking his place at the hot corner next season?  Casual reminder Giants only pay about $13 M AAV on Longo's salary and they are about $90 M under the CBT threshold for next season even with his contract on the books.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.61.  One of those games.  It looked like Shark had settled down after giving up 3 runs in the first 2 innings, but he went 3B/GO/2B/BB.  Bochy brought in Fernando Abad to face the LH batting Ty France who hit one into the arcade to put this game away.  Shark is kind of like a RHP version of Barry Zito who gets a lot of QS's but when he doesn't, he gives up so many Runs and HR's that the bad games tend to be the ones you remember.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants remain 7 games behind in the Wild Card race, but with another less game to make up the difference.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants now hit the road for a Labor Day day game in St Louis with Tyler Beede facing veteran Adam Wainwright.

*********************************************************************************

Pablo Sandoval was activated from the IL for one game on roster expansion day for one last PA before going under the knife for TJ surgery.  He got a nice ovation coming off the field.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants also called up C/1B/LF Aramis Garcia who started at 1B, LF/1B Chris Shaw, LHP Conner Menez and RHP Burch Smith.

*********************************************************************************

Reyes Moronta tore his labrum on the pitch last night that caused him to fall to the ground in pain.  It will likely require surgery. The usual recovery time from labrum surgery is 1-1.5 years with variable outcomes even after full healing.

  1. Going to St Louis just now is just about the worst news the Giants could get.
Cardinals are on a giant-eske streak of 18-5 since August playing mostly sub-.500 teams (like the Giants are now), are 43-26 .632 at home, and are 3 games up on the Central Division.
The good news, if there is any, St Louis lost late last night to the Reds in the second game of what was back-to-back weekend doubleheaders (!) using 8 pitchers yesterday and 13 different pitchers over the weekend. Their starters Wednesday and Thursday are TBD against Bumgarner and Webb.

  2. As good as Longo’s bat has been, his defense has been the opposite. His skills at 3B have shown a noticeable decline and to me he seems like he needs a future position either 1B or DH on an American League team. Either would help reduce his injury risk as well which has proven to be a concern.

Tough decisions will be coming this offseason and I have to think that at least one of the 4 between Longo, Posey, Belt, and Crawford will be gone. In order of likely to go I would put it at Longo then Belt then Posey then Crawford. Longo has the most trade value and then possibly Belt. Posey is the most beloved and along with Crawford doesnt have an immediate replacement.

The Giants were ready to throw over 300 million at Harper last offseason so instead of putting Harper on that check they could very easily write in Anthony Rendon’s name instead. It makes way too much sense especially comparing him to what they would have gotten with Harper. RH bat at a bigger position of need and much more well rounded. It would allow them to either trade Longo or shift him over to 1B and trade Belt. Bat him in the middle if the lineup and build a team around this guy who is very much in the running for an MVP this year!

    1. You might be selling Longoria a little short.

Fangraphs defensive 3B rating in UZR/150 for all MLB:
      1. Chapman
      2. Arenado
      3. Longoria
      4. Machado
      12. Escobar
      18. Turner (Negative)

Offensive >400 PAs: he's #23 in all MLB 3B (Fangraphs).

For San Francisco, Baseball-Reference oWAR, dWAR, and overall WAR, Longoria is #1, #2 (very slightly), & #1 (significantly).

Other than defense, he may not be in the upper echelon of 3Bmen in MLB, but he is the best position player on the 2019 Giants.
Unless the Giants want to play Dubon, Avalino, or Garcia at 3B, there is no one near the MLB in the Giants system.

Rendon @ 30 yo, will get a QO and is likely to get a $225 million offer from Nationals for 6 years because, after Harper, they can't let him get away.

  3. Posey and Crawford both have "full" no trade contracts; so liekly wwould have to be bought out. Posey is going to the hall!
Belt has limited 10 team no trade contract. So i see him as the likely to be moved with Giants eating some of the contract.
Longo is still a good bet at third at least for next season.
