Game Wrap 9/3/2019: Cardinals 1 Giants 0

Dereck Rodriguez pitched a darn good game but two singles by Mike Yastrzemski were the only hits for the offense.  Key Lines:

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.15.  As good as this line looks, DRod actually suffered from bad BABIP luck as 2 of the 5 hits he allowed came in the first inning, a deflected IF single and a squibber that started out heading toward the 1B dugout then made a full 90 degree turn toward the field and into fair territory.  By the time the Giants could see it was going to be a fair ball, it was too late to make a play.  I don't know if this is a corner turn for Young Dereck, but there is no reason to not let him pitch through September and see if he might be an option for a 5'th Starter/Swingman role next season.

Madison Bumgarner tries to get the Giants back in the Win column tomorrow facing RHP Michael Wacha.

The Giants added IF Corban Joseph to the active roster.  He's played mainly 2B in his career, but Bochy's plan is to have him play 3B when Longo needs a rest.  Oh, and Joseph has a career BA of .197.

Johnny Cueto's rehab suffered a setback due to a stiff back.  I'm sure this has nothing to do with the Giants falling out of contention for a playoff berth.

  1. Heck of a game for DRod! I'm not down on the offense today since Flaterty has been a hot pitcher with an era of 1.01 the past 2 months. Hopefully the bats wakeup for the final 2 games of this series. No reason not to let DRod pitch thru Sept.

  2. DRod is pitching for 2020, what he does in 20 goes a long way in what the Team does.

  3. Very frustrating, please act like your trying > play some aggressive small ball!
    Brett Butler where are you???

  4. Dick! giveth and Dick! taketh away.
Giants rode his bat into contention and are riding it back out.
A testament to you-can't-play-injured: Dick! will bring toonder when healthy and just rain when not.
    June 21 to July 23: 6 HRs .397/.460/.821 Giants: 18-7
    Last 21 games: 0 HR .182/.250/.236 Giants: 8-13
    He's lucky he's not a horse.

Question: would the Giants have been better off not signing him, not getting over .500, not closing to within a couple games of the WC, and selling off all the expiring contracts (out to 2021 FA) that they could (Bumgarner, Smith, Watson, Pillar, Sandoval, Vogt, maybe Samardzija) for some more future potential?
And a Top 10 draft pick which they might get anyway -- right now they're just 2.5 games out of #10! With enough losses, 5-6 might have been within range.

    1. There is no honor in the hard tank ala Tigers two years ago. Plus that would be cruel to Bosh.

I like the way this season has played out - they were the best team in baseball for a month and that was a blast.
They picked up some good prospects - and now they sputter to 2K wins for The Bosh with their draft position improving day by day.

    2. If the Giants were offered anything close to their asking price for MadBum or Smith I think they would have taken it. Farhan is a smart smart dude so he didnt just factor in how it would have affected the rest of the season and getting prospects, he factored how it would affect the fan base, long term fan morale, and ticket sales. This could have been a season where many fans said goodbye to going to games and spending money but the moves he didnt make actually gave us hope and has put butts in seats. I think he made the right choice regardless of the end results

    3. Maybe we'll know some day what offers were "rejected" and maybe who made them. There are teams in both leagues not just fighting for the wild card but the division winner which gets a third place seed.
IMO, Zaidi pulled Smith and Bumgarner and some support players because of the effects it would have on the team ("we got so close") and of course the ticket sales.
Without a sort-of big bat like Dick! and so many weaknesses, they will be lucky even with this team not to freefall.

  5. I'm glad they signed Dick, and liked how the season has played out. Hope the team can finish the season strong so that there can be optimism for next season. I've read that the FO want this to be a quick rebuild. I also think this will give Zaidi more reason to spend money next season if they finish strong. Question: should they move the bullpen mounds to triples alley, making Oracle safer for outfielders and shortening the dimensions? Baggs believes that they will consider it since it was brought up during their failed Harper pursuit. If they do this, they can't use the park as an excuse for not signing hitters.

    1. Don't expect Z to spend like a Drunk Sailor just to satisfy the Fans. Z has rebuilt the OF and MIF at low cost, I expect him to do the same at the Inf. Corners, C and RP. Where he will spend " some " money will be SP.
