DrB's 2019 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #42 JJ Santa Cruz

JJ Santa Cruz, LHP.   DOB:  1/15/1996.  6'7", 220 lbs.  Undrafted Free Agent 2018.

2018 College:  1-0, 10.80, 13 IP, 8 BB, 19 K.
2018 Minors(3 levels/4 teams):  0-2, 1.78, 34 IP, 11 BB, 32 K.

If you are looking for an underdog to root for, you have have found him here.  Aside from having at least a 70 baseball name, JJ Santa Cruz was an undrafted FA out of Fresno State.  Before that, he graduated from the same HS in Madera, CA(Liberty) as Stetson Woods.  He then pitched for Fresno City College for 2 years before hooking on with Fresno St without a lot of success.  He does have size, though, and we know the Giants love pitchers with size.  He did pitch pretty well in 2 appearances for the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League in 2016 allowing 1 ER in 6 IP with 1 BB and 5 K's.  His pro debut went surprisingly well so maybe he's just a guy whose game plays up against wood bats?

No scouting reports that I could find, but a couple of still pics show him with a loooong stride.  He must release the ball from in front of the mound circle.  Odds are against him maintaining success at higher levels but maybe he's this year's Joe Biagini?
