Hot Stove Update: Giants Bring Back Derek Holland

The Giants re-signed LHP Derek Holland for 1 yr/$7 M.  The deal comes with a team option for $6.5 M for 2020 with incentives which could bring the total value to $15.5 M over 2 years.  Given some of the contracts pitchers signed early in the offseason, I am really surprised the Giants were able to get Holland back at such a low price.  I probably didn't hurt that he desperately wanted to stay with the Giants.  Derek Holland had a terrific season last year in a comeback of sorts.  Bobby Evans signed him to a minor league contract with $1.75 M if he made the majors.  He's run hot and cold throughout his career, so the challenge is for him to keep it going in 2019.  The risk here is minimal to the Giants so good move to bring him back.  Q:  Shouldn't Bobby Evans get the credit for finding Derek Holland at a bargain basement price and get the biggest value out of his performance?

  1. Good move signing Derek Holland to a team friendly contract. It's interesting that Zaidi is still looking to add to the starting pitching depth and is confident in adding outfielders before spring training. I know Pollack is good, but is he worth giving up a draft pick if a team signs him? This off season continues to drag on.... MLB may need to do something about it. Maybe have a deadline on all MLB free agent contracts being done by January 15th? Sure Evans deserve the credit for Holland, but fans will forget because he's no longer the GM.

  2. Give Evens the credit -- he'd get the blame if it didn't work.

How does the process work for a former major leaguer without a contract?

Holland was release by the White Sox on September 5, 2017.
Almost 6 months later on February 13, 2018, he was signed to a minor league contract and invited to ST. That's

What got him the contract? Did his agent initiate the contact by phoning around? Did a scout check him out? Somebode studyint the FAs?

Holland was one of many unsigned guys, had pretty much stunk things up for 3 years.

The Giants weren't long on SPs, but Bumgarner wasn't hurt yet, Cueto and Shark were returning, as were Blach and Stratton. Beede, Suarez, and Rodriguez were coming to ST.

It worked out great -- just wondering how it happened?
