The reason Avelino is in the top 50 is 1. He is eligible and on the 40 man roster and 2. He can legitimately play SS which gives him a leg up in competition for a utility IF role. Don't expect much from the bat.

Mike Gerber was #31, but he's been DFA'd. I just moved everyone behind him up one notch and added Yorlis Rodriguez at #50.

If Gerber clears waivers, do you think 1. The giants will keep him or 2. He'll accepted a minor league assignment?
ReplyDeleteIDK. I was never that keen on Gerber. Not sure why a lot of folks seemed to think he was the next Max Muncy. If he clears waivers, which I think is likely, I could see him signing a minor league deal with a ST invite.

ReplyDeletePanik played a lot of SS in SJ in 2012 (no 2B), then 20 games in AA in 2013 before moving to 2B.
Had the Giants seen enough or did they see that Crawford was SS for good and the opening for Panik was 2B?
Is Avelino a whiz-bang SS? MLB Pipeline rates him Arm: 60 | Field: 50 (same as Luciano) and Howard Arm: 55 | Field: 50 maybe saying 2B for him?
Not "whiz-bang" but Avelino is probably better defensively at SS than other utility options right now.
DeleteIMO, Howard is a much better hitter than Avelino and is probably passable at SS. I just think the Giants will want him to get a bit more salt and play every day in AAA while Avelino's ceiling is probably utility anyway
