DrB's 2019 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #37 Johneshwy Fargas

Johneshwy Fargas, OF.  DOB:  12/15/1994.  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 180 lbs.  Drafted 2013 Round 11.

2018 A+:  .288/.354/.421, 9 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 47 SB, 6.7 BB%, 15.6 K%, 315 PA.

After he hit .194 in his second try in San Jose then .205 after a demotion to Augusta in 2017, I've gotta admit to admit I gave up on Johneshwy Fargas.  I also have to admit I don't know for sure if Fargas is still in the Giants organization.  2018 was his 6'th pro season and I think that qualifies him for minor league free agency.  He's still listed on the SJ roster, so I'm running with it.  Third time in San Jose was a charm for Johneshwy(I think we've settled on Jon-esh-wee as the pronunciation of his name) and he posted the best statistical season of his pro career.  Now, if he can just not do a faceplant in Richmond, we can start dreaming about a leadoff hitter who gets on base at a .350 clip and steals 60 bases.

  1. Doc, just wondering what you think about the Giants slow off season. Is Zaidi being hampered by the slow moving player market and Giants payroll situation?

    1. Honestly, I think Zaidi has missed some good opportunities. He seems to be waiting for a secondary buyers market after Machado and Harper sign, I and I'm not at all convince it's going to develop. It's actually been a pretty reasonable buyers market all offseason. You really have to focus on OF market. When I go over the FA market and what might be available in trade, I'm honestly not seeing a whole lot to like.

Now, Zaidi undoubtedly has access to information that I don't have and I don't have the time to look up every potentially available OF, but I'm starting to think they might be just as well off to roll with the current roster and hope for a breakout or two.

As for payroll, it's only limiting him if he or the owners want it to. The Giants are still at least $25-$30 M below the luxury tax and it wouldn't be the end of the world for them if they went slightly over. Not saying they should sign Bryce Harper because I don't think he's a particularly good fit for the ballpark, but they could if they wanted to.

  2. Thanks Doc, just trying to make sense of it all. Zaidi sounded confident about acquiring 2 starting outfielders but was in no rush to pull the trigger. Maybe he's waiting for the market to fall further? Why not give someone like Mac a chance to earn a spot instead? Schulman mentioned that a source told him that the team payroll is currently closer to the luxury tax then people think. Maybe this is why Buster Olney reported that Zaidi is waiting for prices to fall on outfielders to avoid going over the tax. I remember a beat writer saying owners are not eager to take on an additional big expenditure during what figures to be a rebuilding years. It looks like the front office wants to give out short term contracts for now as they try to get out from under their big multi year contracts. Hopefully Zaidi has a good plan to bring back the team to contending status

    1. Good point about Mac. I think there is more potential than a lot of people think in the OF's currently in the organization. I've written several times about how much I like Drew Ferguson but Henry Ramos and Anthony Garcia also have very exciting upsides. I still think Mac has a 30 HR season or 2 in him somewhere.

Will Smith seems to be the Giants top trade chip. Several times I've started to look around the league to see what contending teams might need a Will Smith on a 1 year rental and what they might be willing to trade. Every time I got about halfway through I decided they might as well roll with what they have then try to trade Smith for a prospect or two at the deadline if they are out of contention.

    2. One of the blogs linked to the left posted a list of 5 OF the writer thinks the Giants should go after:

      Gerardo Parra- Really?

CarGo- Look at this Home/Road splits. He would likely be close to useless in Oracle Park.

Marwin Gonzalez- has only had 1 season with an fWAR greater than 1.6.

Adam Jones- fWAR of 2.0 and 1.6 the last two seasons.

Bryce Harper- Not gonna happen unless the Giants are laying in the weeds, which does not seem likely.

There you have it. I'd rather roll with the current roster and non-roster invitees, myself.

    3. If Marwyn Gonzalez could be gotten for a 2-3 years at $7.5M AAV, he adds versatility but his agent is a pain in the Borass.

  3. RosterResource estimate includes 40-man roster cost and Player Benefits: Estimated Luxury Tax Payroll $172,984,190
That's $33M left to spend -- plus they could trade off $10M or more of salary if they're not competitive.
It's not the OF that will make or break the Giants in 2019, it's how the pricey vets perform -- Posey, Belt, Longoria, Crawford, Samardzija & Melancon pull down HALF the Luxury Tax Threshold: $103 mill.
The best OF in baseball would have trouble dragging that anchor around if they aren't at their own average or better. Not their best -- just do better than average for themselves.
Mac, Duggar, Shaw, Ferguson, Slater, and a little of Belt and Hanson are not going to hurt a good year from Posey and the 4 IFers.

    1. I don't agree with this analysis. Yes, the Giants have to get at least career average years from Posey, Belt, Panik, Crawford, Longoria and Bumgarner to be competitive, but that won't be enough if the OF is the dumpster fire it has been for the past 2 seasons. They can compete if they get good years from their core AND if they upgrade their OF.
