Game Wrap 06-23-2010: Astros 6 Giants 3

Barry Zito had one of those awful starts that, thankfully, have been rare for him this year. That is pretty much the story of the game as the Giants offense was not up to overcoming the 5 run hole that Zito dug. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .284 Just when it looked like this guy's run might be petering out, he comes up with another great game.

Edgar Renteria- 3 for 4. BA= .343. If he can stay healthy, Rent should be a contributor. Looks like Buster Posey may be the odd man out here?

Barry Zito- 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.45. Just not a good start here. Hope for better next time.

The loss drops the Giants to 39-31, 2.5 games behind the division leading Padres who edged the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4. The Giants managed to stay 1.5 games ahead of the Dodgers who dropped their 5'th straight game to SoCal rival Angels 2-1. Meanwhile, Colorado topped the BoSox 8-6 keeping them 4 games behind the leaders and moving them into a tie with the Dodgers for 3'rd place. Arizona is battling the Yankees to a 5-5 tie late in their ballgame.

Matt Cain tries to salvage a series win for the Giants against the Astros as well as a split for the road trip in a day game tomorrow.

  1. The language from the Giants appear to be that Posey is going to be around for the season.

I think that they can fit in good playing time (not full, but good) for the players who are contributing because of the stretch of games going to the end of August where there are not a lot of days off (just ASB in July and 2 off days in August until one late).

Rent has been injury prone this season, so he's probably getting the shorter end of the stick, but he's hitting well enough that he's going to be in the lineup regularly.

I think it can work. Posey will get days off (remember, the worry pre-season was that he wouldn't last a full season, based on how he pooped out last season) as well as days catching, which will free up days at 1B for Sandoval to start and thus Uribe at 3B.

Sandoval will get days off too, to keep him fresher later into the season. Sanchez also. Those will give Uribe starts, plus he should get a rest as well.

Torres has been horrible against LHP this season (though better for career), so he'll get some rests against them this year, and Huff has historically been worse against LHP, so he would get rests as well. And Burrell will probably get a rest too, he's no spring chick either.

I think Posey will control his playing time by how well he hits, same as usual, as Bochy has been like that in managing, if you are hitting and producing, you will find your way to the lineup, particularly if you are young, but if you struggle badly for a month, then out you go. But if everyone is scuffling, of course you go with the vet.

  2. It sounds like the Giants are going to start working Posey into more games as a catcher, probably a good idea if that's where they want him to play next season.
