Down on the Farm: 06-24-2010

AAA Fresno Grizzlies topped the Portland Beavers 6-2:

John Bowker- 3 for 5, 2 2B, HR(7). BA= .338.
Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .310.
Henry Sosa- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.72.

Huge game for Bowker. Sosa had a shutout for 6 IP, gave up both runs in the 7'th. Is Sosa turning himself into a trade chip?

AA Akron Aeros edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2:

Brandon Crawford- 0 for 2, 3 BB. BA= .245.
Daryl Maday- 7.2 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 15/3. ERA= 2.22.

A bright spot in Crawford's season so far, OBP= .351. He's getting on base despite the relatively low BA. Maday was a GB machine. GB pitchers will tend to have a higher BABIP as balls randomly find their way through the IF, but if they can keep it on the ground, and avoid BB's, they can limit the damage quite nicely.

High A Modesto Nuts beat the San Jose Giants 7-2:

Juan Perez- 1 for 4, 3B(6). BA= .326.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4. BA= .317.
Drew Biery- 2 for 3. BA= .276.
Kyle Woodruff- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 2.25.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 6.04.

Belt is still with the team post All-Star break and post draft. Maybe he's going to get the Thomas Neal treatment?

Low A Kannapolis Intimidators scared off the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2:

Nick Liles- 3 for 4. BA= .315.
Jose Valdez- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.48.

Not much to talk about here.

Boise Hawks outhit the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 10-7:

Chris Lofton- 2 for 5. BA= .296.
Julio Izturis- 2 for 4, HBP. BA= .294.
Jesse Shriner- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .294.
Ryan Scoma- 3 for 4, BB. BA= .389.
Edward Concepcion- 1.2 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 19.29
Mario Rodriguez- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Kaohi Downing- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Mario Rodriguez has been the most consistently effective pitcher for the Volcanoes so far. Concepcion maybe isn't quite ready for this level? Good to see Julio Izturis off the a good start. He's another guy who seems to understand the role of getting on base in utilizing speed on the basepaths. You can't steal first base!!

Rookie AZL Giants edged the AZL A's 5-4:

Carlos Willoughby- 2 for 4, 2 SB(6). BA= .364.
Wes Hobson- 2 for 4. BA= .444.
Armando Paniagua- 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 4.50.
Ryan Bradley- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Jake Dunnington- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1). ERA= 0.00.

Willoughby keeps it going! Hobson tore the cover off the ball for Appalachian State. This is too low a level for him, but he maybe a sleeper draft pick. Paniagua's line not too impressive until you get the the K's. Bradley pitched a dominant 2 innings too. Dunnington looks like the closer for AZL Giants.

DSL Nats beat the Giants 5-2:

Marvin Barrios- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.13.

Barrios is one of two international bonus babies to keep an eye on in the DSL.

  1. What is the story with Maday? He had a solid year in '09 for Connecticut, but was not given a promotion to Fresno and is never talked about as a prospect. Now he is having another solid season and still no talk of him as a prospect.

  2. He may be viewed by the team as a good minor league pitcher, but not having enough upside to progress to the majors, so they assign him where he is needed to fill out a rotation, kind of like Garrett Broshuis before he retired.
