Game Wrap 06-01-2010: Rockies 2 Giants 1

Barry Zito pitched a gem of a game, but the Giants offense continued to sputter against a pitcher nobody will confuse with Ubaldo Jimenez. The Rockies then won the bullpen battle as the Giants reserve hurlers finally cracked in the 11'th inning in a game the Giants really needed to win. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 1 for 5, HR(3). Torres' HR produced the only run of the night for the Giants, and he had an assist from the OF at home plate, but I'd probably rather he had gotten 2 singles and 2 walks on the night. This Giants team isn't going anywhere with Torres the slugger. It will do OK with Torres the on-base machine.

Pablo Sandoval- 0 for 5. After getting 3 of the team's 4 hits off Jimenez the day before, Sandoval's 0'fer might have cost the Giants this game as Sanchez and Huff sandwiched him in the order with 2 hits each.

Bengie Molina- 0 for 4. Maybe Bengie is hearing Buster Posey's footsteps, or maybe Bengie is just done. How long before the Giants take the nuclear option, move Buster to catcher, Huff back to 1B and Burrell, or somebody else to the OF?

Barry Zito- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 2.78. Zito was masterful most of the night. I think that's the best I've seen his curveball in his Giants career. He had that bad boy snapping through the strike zone all night.

Brian Wilson- 2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. A near heroic effort by Wilson to extend the game into extra innings. Alas, it was all for naught!

The loss drops the Giants back into 4'th place at 27-24, 0.5 games behind Colorado in the NL West. The Padres lost to the Mets 4-2 so the GIants remained 3.5 games off the division lead of 31-21. The Dodgers edged the hapless D'Backs 1-0 to move within 1 game of the Padres at 30-22 while the D'Backs dropped to 20-33, 10.5 games behind.

Hoss takes the mound for the GIants tonight to try stop the bleeding and prevent a series sweep by Colorado vs Jeff Francis.

About 10 minutes after they hire the new GM and manager - no way Sabes and Boch do that.

  2. According to radio reports Molina's hits are better now than before, that he'll come out of his funk anytime now. We'll see.

Last season, when Molina heard Posey's footsteps, he started hitting again. Does not appear to be working this season.

Reportedly, Molina's batting mechanics was diagnosed by Bochy. Why wasn't the hitting coach the one to notice that?

I was thinking the same thing on Sandoval. It would have been better if he could have gotten those three hits in this game than waste it on Ubaldo.

    Zito!

  3. I don't know. I read a report today that has Burrell coming up by the weekend. If that is true, then the only way I see it working out is for either Rowand or Molina to sit. Could get real interesting!
