Down on the Farm: 06-28-2010

AAA Las Vegas 51's downed the Fresno Grizzlies 13-7:

Tyler Graham- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(20). BA= .367.
Jesus Guzman- 2 for 5, 2 HR(9). BA= .301.

Guzman has 3 HR's in 2 days.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Akron Aeros 7-3:

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 4, BB. BA= .246.
Thomas Neal- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(8). BA= .286.
Roger Kieschnick- 1 for 4, HR(4), SF. BA= .248.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4. BA= .252.
Felix Romero- 7.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 4.36.

Thomas Neal is red hot! .333/.415/.694 over his last 10 games. GIllaspie is hitting .333 over his last 10.

High A Visalia Rawhide edged the San Jose Giants 5-4:

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 4, SB(26). BA= .271.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4. BA= .329.
James Simmons- 1 for 3, HR(3). BA= .231.
Joel Weeks- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .210.
Justin Fitzgerald- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.30.

The HR's came from unlikely sources. Simmons has all the potential in the world, but hasn't figured out how to make consistent contact. Based on appearance, Weeks looks like he's about reached his ceiling now. Strong game from Fitz.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets again outslugged the Kannapolis Intimidators 13-9:

Evan Crawford- 3 for 5, BB, SB(13). BA= .263.
Ryan Cavan- 3 for 5, 2 HR(7), BB. BA= .275.
Chris Dominguez- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(12), BB, SB(8). BA= .281.
Luke Anders- 5 for 5, BB. BA= .298.

Cavan is red hot! .390 over his last 10 games. 11 for his last 20 AB's. 4 HR's in his last 3 games. .829 SLG% over his last 10 games. Great to see Chris Dominguez hit HR's in the context of all-around hitting. .381/.447/.595 over his last 10 games. Anders gets on base 6 times and is hitting .375 over his last 10. Once again, we have a great bunch of guys down in Augusta who look like they are being well coached.

Short Season Tri-City Dust Devils stirred things up to beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-2:

Raynor Campbell- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .300.
Ryan Scoma- 2 for 5. BA= .387.
Jose Medina- 3 for 4, BB. BA= .378.
Brennan Flick- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.12.

Still sorting things out in S-K. Medina looks like he's a hitter, but at 23 yo, shoudn't he be at a higher level? He played CF tonight. I had him pegged as strictly a corner OF.

Rookie AZL BrewCrew stomped the AZL Giants 8-2:

Wes Hobson- 2 for 4. BA= .429.
Joseph Staley- 2 for 4, HR(1), SB(2). BA= .188.
Stephen Harrold- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Hobson should be playing at a higher level, IMO. Harrold is unscored upon in 3 appearances so far.

DSL Mets shade the Giants 5-4:

Gabriel Cornier- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .419.

Cornier is a switch-hitting catcher who just turned 18 on June 10.

  1. Isn't it incredible that Neal would get so hot off a simple suggestion/observation from a pitcher? Maybe we should have a hitting coach who is a pitcher along with a regular hitting coach, at least on every minor league team.

I mean, why didn't the hitting coach catch that? Small suggestion, huge results! Yet the hitting coach didn't see that and then advise the hitter, he had to go and complain to the pitcher, who then told him what he was doing wrong.

  2. I agree. Tony Pena is the son of a catcher and he's a pitcher who used to play SS. I'm thinking this guy is going to make a darn good manager some day!
