Game Wrap 6/20/2026: Marlins 6 Giants 3

Trevor McDonald struggled with command and with sloppy defense in the early innings while the lineup failed to bring in runners in scoring position in another dispiriting loss.  Key Lines:

Luis Arraez 2B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .321.  The top two batters in the lineup reached base 5 times in 10 PA's yet failed to figure in the scoring in large part because Matt Chapman 3B, Rafael Devers 1B and Willy Adames SS went a combined 0 for 13 out of the 3, 4 and 6 holes in the lineup, pun intended.

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 R.  BA= .331.  Otto Lopez went 1 for 5 so Lee now trails him by just .001 in the batting race.

Casey Schmitt LF- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(16), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .293.  Mighty Casey is on some kind of fire.  After 4 consecutive 2-hit games, he lit this one up for 3 XBH's.

Drew Gilbert CF- 3 for 4, 2B, RBI.  BA= .234.  I understand why a lot of fans find Gilbert annoying, but I like the kid.  I hope he continues to get regular playing time.  It's not like this season is going anywhere anyway and I think he can develop into the type of player other team's find annoying.

Trevor McDonald RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 5/2 GO/AO, 3 HBP.  ERA= 4.93.  McDonald's 2-seam FB was sailing armside which usually means he's dropping his arm and getting under the pitches.  The result was a wild start which wasn't helped by 4 errors including one where he failed to find first base with his foot as he was covering a grounder hit to Devers.

Matt Gage LHP- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.96.  Gage became the latest reliever to fail to keep the game close.  Inherited runners are tough but a big part of a reliever's job is to strand them, especially if you area a lefty brought in to face a lefty batter.

J. T. Brubaker RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.75.  Has anyone considered trying Brubaker as a SP?  He must be better than the 6'th best option.

Tristan Beck RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.75.  Beck has had his struggles but since giving up a 4-spot on June 2, he's allowed 2 R in 5.2 IP.

Max Meyer RHP(Marlins)- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.80.  Here's why I mention Meyer.  Remember when there was a reported kerfuffle between Patrick Bailey and the coaches over pitch-calling from the dugout?  The Giants broadcast crew sniffed out the Marlins call all of their pitches from the dugout and in plain site for everybody to see.  They had the TV camera doing close ups with Dave Fleming and Javier Lopez trying to decipher the signs.  The Assistant Pitching Coach calls the pitches after looking at a notebook.  Meyer obviously had the freedom shake off the pitch if he didn't like it.  I couldn't see if the call then went to the catcher or if Meyer gave some signal as to what he wanted to throw.  Very interesting process to watch.

Logan Webb RHP tries to avoid a sweep tomorrow in a 10:40 AM PDT start time facing Ryan Gusto RHP who comes in with a 7.24 ERA.

  3. After yesterday's game, I would consider swapping McDonald for Whisenhunt

  4. A very simple change in the lineup, which is the way it should be anyway, is switching Schmitt and Adames.
Two of the Giants worst batters, Chapman and Adames, are in productive slots at 3 & 6, when they belong with the ragtag bottom.
Since Lee has found his KBO stroke and will certainly bail out of his contract after next season, he is tradeable, especially if he continues anywhere near his .331/.361/.462/.823 this season.
With the uncertainty of there being a 2027 season, even Bader might have some trade value this year, although perhaps not at full $10M+ salary and he needs to get off the schneid...

    1. Doc, you're right! "They" read your column and maybe the comments!
Schmitt @3 knocks Arraez @1 home for G's only run.
Adames and Chapman dropped to 6 & 7 but it did NFG as 6 Giants (including those 2) took 0-fers failing to advance runners at every turn!
Those of us Fathers who took an early and long lunch with their Daughters were triple lucky: good food, good company, and didn't watch the game...

  5. IS COX STILL UP W/THE TEAM? IF SO, WHY NOT PLAYING? TOO YOUNG TO HAVE HIM SIT AS A DEFENSIVE REPLACEMENT/PINCH RUNNER. GIVE HIM SOME RUNWAY AND SEND GILBERT BACK TO RAH-RAH TENNESSEE

    1. I think the idea is for Gilbert and Cox to be a L-R platoon with Gilbert taking the strong side as a LH batter. IMO, that is OK. As much as we all like Cox and his tools, his ceiling is probably a platoon CF.
