Logan Webb limited the Cubs to an unearned run through 8 innings and got enough run support to even his W-L record at 4-4. Key Lines:
Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 3, HR(7), 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .261. I like Chapman in the leadoff role. He is third on the team in OBP and leads in walks by a large margin.
Casey Schmitt LF/1B- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP, SB(6), R. BA= .276. Schmitt made a throwing error costing Webb the unearned run but made up for it at the plate.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, R. BA= .331. Lee made a running catch to save a run and keep Webb in the game to finish the 8'th inning. He stays in second place in the race for the batting title.
Drew Gilbert CF/LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, R, RBI. BA= .229. Gilbert has struggled, batting .179 over his last 7 games.
Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.46. Last two turns through the rotation, Webb is the only SP to get through at least 6 innings.
Giants have a travel day tomorrow and start a road trip in Atlanta against the Braves on Tuesday with Adrian Houser RHP facing Grant Holmes RHP who comes in with a 4.05 ERA.
Webb is my favorite Giant. WBC knocked him off schedule but he’s back to being an ace.
ReplyDeleteIt would not offend me to see him traded to a serious contender to give him a shot at a championship. Wish it could be here but that’s not happening.
Great to see Logan Webb healthy and pitching great. Bryce Eldridge with a. Rbii single to LF. With Housers turn coming up again I wonder what happened to the young pitching they talked about having in the off season. I wish they would use some creativity when Houser pitches like implementing an opener
ReplyDeleteAn Opener for Houser would make some sense. I just can't get past the idea that with Openers, you basically burn up a bullpen arm up front. The main reason to do it would be if you can use it to take advantage of L-R matchups, but that hasn't worked out too well for the Giants this year either.
DeleteWho would it be?
DeleteWould you burn up Hentges? Miller? Sanmartin?
Is there anyone one else on the 40-man roster who isn't injured?
Good to see Webb get some hitting and defensive support to compliment his strong pitching. Great timely catch by Lee.
ReplyDeleteNo walks by Webb today! I can't believe some fans are calling for a trade. Who would be left in the rotation that could be considered halfway reliable?
ReplyDeleteThe point of trading Webb now rather than waiting until the mileage on his arm takes its toll is not to make the team better this year or even next year but much better 3+ years down the road.
DeleteWebb to me is a career long Giant like Matt Cain or at least should be. We shouldnt trade him away just because we suck abs especially because our starting pitching is horrible and there’s no replacements for him plus good free agent pitchers cost a lot of money so you aren’t going to find any cheap unless you can draft and develop them. Anyways, it’s annoying how much Tony V has stuck with Gilbert since Cox arrived. I don’t mind Gilbert and I think he has the potential to be solid in the future, but he’s struggling now and Cox was hitting over .400 in AA with decent extra base pop, walks, and a stolen base rate that would be 100 over a full season. If you didn’t call Cox up to play him, then let him get valuable at bats in AAA. At the same time, Gilbert is struggling so why would you NOT give Cox an extended run? They haven’t given him one at all and kept pinch hitting Gilbert for him.
DeletePersonally I would like the Giants, for once, to sell high on a star player to secure a better future. I love and admire Webb's pitching as much as anyone but I don't see him as bonded to the fanbase they way Cain, Timmy and Bum were. If they can get a haul of prospects for him, I would trade him this year when his value is probably the highest it's ever going to be.
DeleteAs much as I like Jonah Cox, his promotion looks and feels like a rush job. To me, Gilbert is the guy you keep putting out there and see if he can figure it out at the MLB level. As I have said before, I see a little bit of Lenny Dykstra in him. And again, not a fan of Dykstra as a person but he was the type you hated the Giants to play against.
DeleteI agree on Logan Webb - His trade value is as high as it's ever going to be, with a very decent contract and years still under control. That's super valuable at the deadline... With the way this team is losing, and so far out of the playoff race again, they need to retool and reconstruct the roster. Webb is the piece which allows them to bring in a wave of new talent, along with some very strong trades by Posey last year and this one.
DeleteWith GILBERT, I gotta disagree with you Doc. Gilbert can figure out how to hit in AAA, because he's making the MLB team worse and his antics are not so much infectious as they are awkward..
He's got no power to this point and he doesn't really even steal bases with his speed. It's okay if there's no one else, but Jonah Cox is last time I checked hitting well over .300 in the MLB right now. Why would he be sitting and not proving he can or can't keep it going?
IMO
Gilbert is an iteration on Marvin Bernard. That guy will always be around at the fringe..
Cox is his own dude, writing his own player profile, and has a lot of tools that he brings including SBs and XB power. Oh, and he's the best defensive OF in the org.
We'll see.
DeleteJonah Cox has 6 hits in 15 AB's and some of those hits came off positional players pitching. He was rushed up from AA in yet another panic move by a front office that hasn't changed all that much from the FZ days.
DeleteIf Webb is traded in his prime, let's hope the Giants get someone better than "Sudden" Sam McDowell...
Delete....or Ray Sadecki? David Green? Yes, if you trade Webb the centerpiece has to be at least one MLB-ready prospect or you don't make the deal.
Delete....and I mean a high-ceiling MLB-ready prospect.....
DeleteCharlie Fox thought he made the deal of the century.
DeleteThis commenter was a Cardinal fan at the time of the Sadecki trade and lamented a bit losing a recent 20-game winner for a 1Bman with a bad knee — but not for long! He helped St Louis win 2 pennants (1 WS) but wasn't a big factor in either WS, especially in the final loss to Detroit.
DeleteDoc - why isn’t JHL leading off in the one slot?
ReplyDeleteGood question. I would probably go Lee, Chapman, Arraez in the 1, 2, 3 slots.
Deletewith Adames and Devers, it seems the Giants accepted the idea of trading defense for offense but what do we have? we have players inferior in the field to Crawford and Belt and yet are giving the Giants about the same on offense - or that's how it seems to me. so big contracts and a significant drop in defensive WAR. not exactly what Posey had envisioned. i am curious to see who the Giants take at #4 and #29... -es
