The Giants continued to sign players to minor league contracts. This time they extended their catching depth by signing a veteran catcher with local ties, Max Stassi. Stassi is from Yuba City, CA and was a 4'th round draft pick by the A's out of HS in 2009. He has not played since 2022 due to a chronic hip condition for which he underwent surgery. The White Sox declines their team option for 2025 making him a free agent.
Stassi is considered a good defensive catcher but has had some decent years at the plate, the best being with the Angels 2020-2022. He hit .278 with 7 HR in 105 PA's in 2020, .241 with 13 HR in 319 PA in 2021 and .180 with 9 HR, in 375 PA in 2022.
I am sure the deal comes with a spring training invite and a chance to win a backup catcher role with the Giants in 2025.
Optics don’t look good when we sign this guy and the dodgers sign Snell a minute later. I wouldn’t have paid Snell that much but the Giants can’t expect fans to be overly patient when we have the entire NorCal market to ourselves and are still looking in the dumpster before the supermarket. Next offseason isn’t going to have this level of talent and the more they wait the less chance they have. Throw some big money at a few guys like Adames and Santander or prepare for some backlash
