Blogger's Note

Hey team!  I might not be posting daily for awhile as I have hit a bit of writer's block on what to write about.  Will post when there are significant developments in the Hot Stove League.  Still plan to post my Top 50 Giants Prospects list in late December or early January.

Any suggested topics appreciated.

Thanks everybody!

  1. For certain Giants fans this has been an extremely hard week. Dodgers winning + the Johnson's good friend winning political office has saddened me greatly. Take a break & enjoy the start of your retirement Doc.

  5. Doc,
First, enjoy your retirement. Travel, read books, exercise, cook and eat good food and/or whatever you like to do.
I would be interested in a discussion here on hopes amd thoughts on the free agent/trade market. Would you rather have Willy Adames vs. Ha-Seong Kim and at what cost? How much would you pay for Juan Soto? What starting pitcher would be a fit? Burnes, Fried, Flaherty, Manea, Kikuchi, Evoldi, etc., or none of the above? A Pete Alonso or Christian Walker or Pete Alonso.
Just my two cents on this thought.
Back to my original thought, whatever you do, take care of yourself and enjoy every moment.

    1. I might reconsider a Scouting the Free Agent Market series. Seems like everybody knows what the top of the market is and nobody is in a mood to hear about undervalued options.

  7. That's cool Doc...Love whatever we get from you whenever it happens, almost always setting up the table for discussion...But, like you, think we all need to recharge a bit after the past few seasons, especially the past few months..And no sense just writing to write..there will be stuff to write about soon enough as we see Buster starting to put his stamp (for better or worse, for newer or old) on the team and organization..Enjoy your break!!

Maybe time for some Strolls Down Memory Lane for all us old coots?

  8. Idea for material: An article about the biggest minds in the SF Front Office, beyond the GM, to the important hires and carryovers in player personnel and amateur scouting that will be running the show with Posey and new management.

    Thanks!

    1. I don't really have any insight into the Giants front office than what most fans know. It is going to be most interesting to see how Buster operates and what kind of roster he puts together. I waited 6 years for FZ to swing a truly impressive trade. He never did. Buster and Minasian are now on the clock.

  9. Seems like when I watch Patrick Bailey catch Blake Snell he's spending lots of time just blocking the off speed stuff, anyway thank you for your blog and links.

  10. Well just like that you seem to have gotten your wish for something to write about! Giants plan to spend less WTF does that mean!! Article practically writes itself you can title it “Giants rebuild…. Like nothing else!”

    1. Well, Baggs cited an "industry source". Greg Johnson responded by saying there is no hard budget and it depends on multiple factors including what players might be available and for what cost. Baggs is often on the money with his reporting but at this point I think it's premature to get the torches and pitchforks out.

    2. I will say I'm getting distinct vibes the Giants are not in either the Soto or Snell markets and probably not Adames either. Multiple factors pointing to Ha Seong Kim as being their top target. He is a nice fit but I hope they are confident of the medical reports. It sounds like Buster respects the ballpark's impact on power and is looking for more contact/speed players.

    3. KIm is a very low bar Posey is setting if this is true..Another lifetime .240 hitter with a good glove but no power prospect...Just a continuation of FZ's mediocrity if you ask me..ANd then there's the gambling on an injured player route ala the RAY disastsr...he would be another FZ type move..New boss same as the old Boss,..

    4. For what its worth, 3 mlb insiders on MLB.com predicted Giants to sign Snell. Read that if the Giants were to spend over the luxury tax for the 2nd straight year the penalty will be more. Severe. A 2nd, 5th + 6 round pick and $1 million from their international bonus pool. Something to consider, not a good way to do business.

  11. Doc, appreciate the great work you do on your blog and the discussion it generates. You don't need to post everyday, the main thing is that you're enjoying your retirement. Its refreshing that it sounds like Bustet wants to get back to a mix of scouting and analytics evaluating players. Zack Miniasen is a baseball lifer who loves talking baseball.

  12. More contact/speed players would be nice. During the World Series years I would frequently hear players talk about “keeping the line moving” during rallies. Just put the ball in play. In recent years it seems like more hitters are still hunting for the big fly, even with two strikes. This seems to me to be stranding runners at an unbearable pace. Our scoring with runners on base has just been abysmal. Hitters who hit more for average (maybe with less power) might be one of the solutions.
The “scoring with runners on base” puzzle would be at the top on my wish list for this off season.

    1. I can't tell you how many times I have yelled at the TV, "base hit! All you need is a base hit!" If there is two outs and runners at 2'nd and 3'rd, you don't need an effing HR. A base hit is almost guaranteed to score two runs.
