International Signing Day: Scouting the Prospects

Today was the first day of the next international signing cycle.   There were no top 10 or even top 20 signings but the Giants did come away with two consensus top 50 prospects:

#25(Fangraphs):  Jhonny Level(Venezuela).   2B/SS.  16.8 yo.  B-S, T-R.  5'10", 154 lbs.

Looks a bit heavier than listed weight on video I've seen.  Nice swing from both sides of the plate with some power projection.  Listed as SS in official signing list but Fangraphs lists him as 2B.  Comped to Rafael Furcal which would not be a bad outcome.

#46(Fangraphs):  Yohendry Sanchez(Venezuela) C.  17.2 yo.  B-R, T-R. 6'0", 207 lbs.

Classic catcher size but carries the weight well with long well proportioned limbs giving him an athletic appearance on video.  Tremendous power potential.

Overall the Giants signed 20 players from 6 countries:  11 from Venezuela, 5 from Dominical Republic, 1 each from Aruba, Brazil, Cuba and Panama.

The Giants went heavy on position players. Only 4 out of 20 signings, all RHP's.

Of the position players there were 3 catchers, 4 SS, 4 CF, 2 RF, 1 3B, 2 2B.

One that caught my eye out of several videos posted on X was Evan Estevez RF from DR.  6'3", 165 lbs.  Looks a bit heavier than that on video but still lots of room to fill out. Very projectable frame.  Just needs to hit.

We look forward to following their names in DSL boxscores this summer.

  1. Is there a reason why the Giants were unable to snag one of the top prospects or is there just great variance all of these prospects?

    1. This is a huge variance. Rather than saying they didn't sign one of the top prospects, I would say they signed two!
