Wow! What a season for Wade Meckler! He absolutely rocketed through the top 3 levels of the farm system but as we have seen from several other similar career trajectories, didn't seem quite ready to face big league pitching. It didn't help his optics that he appeared physically small, almost tiny compared to other players, especially pitchers. So how do you comp someone like that to, say, Aeverson Arteaga or Grant McCray who I think have higher ceilings but are much farther away from the major leagues? I ranked Meck a bit higher based on his proximity to a MLB career. FWIW, projection systems have him performing much better in 2024, though still not great. Will he get the chance?
The hope for Meckler is that he turns into Fremont native Stephen Kwan. However, I am pretty skeptical of that. Kwan seems more like 1 in a million than the vanguard of a new class of player (or at least the resurgence).

This kid can hit! Period. Was a hitting machine in Richmond and every where else in the minors last year. Yeah, maybe just not ready or worn down for his MLB shot last year, but I wouldn't bet against him,. Can hit, hustles his butt, and has a lot of speed. Hopefully, like with MATOS, Giants are working with him to bulk up a little. Some baserunning coaching so he can t anslate his speed into SBs would be good also. The SAC-SF shuttle this year?
ReplyDeleteThis post had me thinking of small OFs that the Giants had some success with in the past (since the 80's) and immediately came up with Brett Butler, Dan Gladden and Marvin Benard. If Meckler could approach the latter two, I'd be OK with it!
