DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #26 - 24

26.   Onil Perez C.  DOB:  9/10/2002.  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 187 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible.

2023(A):  .300/.364/.413, 2 HR, 21 SB, 8.1 BB%, 11.0 K%, 283 PA.
2023(A+):  .289/.333/.333, 2 SB, 6.3 BB%, 14.5 K%, 48 PA.

A .300 BA with 21 SB's for a 20 yo catcher in A ball will grab your attention if you are a prospect watcher.  I saw Onil play in person just before his promotion to A+ and he does not look fast enough to steal 21 bases by any stretch so I am not sure what to make of that number.  I am curious to see if he can maintain high contact rates at higher levels.  He probably needs to find some power but if he can hit .300 and catch, he might not have to.

25.  Adrian Sugastey C.  DOB:  10/23/2002.  B-R, T-R.  6, 1", 210 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible.

2023(A+):  .298/.333/423, 4 HR, 4.9 BB%, 14.0 K%, 264 PA.

Similar profile to Onil Perez.  Key is if he continues to make contact at higher levels and possibly develop some power.

24.  Zach Morgan C.  DOB:  3/30/2000.  B-R, T-R.  6'0", 180 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Dec. 2025.

2023(A):  .254/.376/.383, 4 HR, 7 SB, 16.7 BB%, 17.4 K%, 258 PA.
2023(A+):  .292/.326/.427, 2 HR, 5.3 BB%, 21.1 K%, 95 PA.

Maybe a tad more power than Perez or Sugastey but he's 2 years older.  Quite similar profile otherwise.  I would again point out the absurdity that at 2 years older and equal levels of play/development, Morgan still has 2 years before he hits Rule 5 eligibility while Perez and Sugastey were already there this offseason.

  1. Great stuff on the young Catchers....MORGAN also had a small stint in the AFL where he hit .265.....Love the offensive numbers for all of them, is there any evaluation out there (or your eye) about their defense/arm?
