DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: Preliminary List

It looks like the Hot Stove League season is going to be a long, drawn out marathon so we will get started on the annual Giants Top 50 Prospects list knowing some of the players may not be with the organization by the start of spring training due to late trades and other roster moves.  As we have done for several years we put out a preliminary list to get reader input and make sure we haven't made any major oversights which happens pretty much every year.  As always, once you get past the top 5 or so, don't get too hung up on exact order as it doesn't really matter and the main purpose of the exercise is getting better acquainted with the prospects in the organization.

  1. Great stuff Doc..A good new years present!! Was hoping to see McDonald in the top 10!..Boy, how far the injured and disappointing BISHOP and BEDNAR have fallen! One guy you might have missed is TENG..Only mention because I watched him twice in Richmond last year and he was amazing...

    1. Yep, will have to find a place for Teng. In my mind, Bishop and Bednar are busts until they can prove otherwise. Not saying they can't or won't but they both seem to be a lot closer to being released than achieving serious prospect status.

    2. Just eyeballing the list it seems like Teng fits somewhere in the Carson Seymour/Landon Roupp range and they are sitting #15 and #16 right now.

  2. Not that the poor guy has done much to merit inclusion on your list with the injuries and poor performance, but have you completely given up on Hunter Bishop, Doc?

    1. For all practical purposes I have given up on Bishop.

  3. Would it be over-reaching to suggest that everyone from Birdsong up among the pitchers shouldn’t be included in any trade packages … but maybe young arms starting with McDonald at No. 9 and those lower on your list could serve as trade bait?

  4. Eagerly awaited as always and looking forward to the breakdown and analysis!

One name that I thought might break top 10 would be Keaton Winn. Does he no longer qualify?

    1. Winn does qualify and we'll add him. I think I was struggling with where to slot him in and then forgot about him.

  5. Hi Doc where do you think Matos and Schmitt would rank if they were still prospects?

  6. Happy New Years Eve Doc. As usual, thank you for all the long hours you put into your posts and analysis. It is much appreciated by all. One name that appears to be missing is Maui Ahuna - he is listed as the number 19 prospect on the Giants team website. That list also has Bednar, Silva and Pomares in the top 30 - I tend to agree with you - let them show something this year before consideration on the list. Another missing name is Brett Auerbach - an inability to hit above high A will do that. APGiantsfan

    1. I don't think Ahuna ever got assigned to a roster and the rosters on milb.com is where I got my list of players from. I will meditate on his name. Maybe somewhere around Cole Foster who is at #27?

  7. Adding Winn and Teng to the list shows where the strength of the orgnization Top 20 is in players ready to contribute in the next year...And Don't sleep on LOUP either if he and his curve can stay healthy...Saying all that, I think any pitcher except Harrison (and maybe Whisenhunt) can be moved IFFF the GIANTS are only able to pull off a trade (and no signings) for a pitcher ala Burnes or even a major young bat..You gotta give to get....

    1. As I said in a reply in the previous post, I wonder if the Giants could buy a year of Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames by taking on Christian Yelich and the rest of his contract, which doesn't look as bad as some make it out to be. That would require only lower level prospects. They could then try to extend Burnes and Adames or slap QO's on them and get them for an additional year without long term commitment or take the extra draft picks and improve the talent level in the farm system.

  8. Thanks for the Giant's content Doc. Wondering about Manuel Mercedes and whether he should be on the list. Looks like he needs to reduce his BB rate...

    1. Mercedes is talented but has been around awhile and has never broken through. Worth considering. Probably more of a prospect than some of the complex kids I have at the back end of the list.

  9. I’ll throw a dart, and say that Teng makes the starting rotation at some point this year.

    1. He certainly could. My sleeper pick to crack the rotation and stay is Trevor McDonald.
