AAA: Sacramento River Cats blanked the Las Vegas Aviators 3-0.
Wade Meckler LF- 2 for 5, 3B. BA= .419.
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .280.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 4/1. ERA= 3.52.
Not sure what to make of Teng. He has 155 K's in 116.1 IP but with 58 BB's. Ratios almost identical to last year which was exclusively AA. He is Rule 5 Draft eligible and might even be eligible for minor league free agency.
AA: Akron Rubber Ducks edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 1-0.
Ryan Murphy RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.91.
Wil Jensen RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.60.
A couple more Rule 5 guys. Giants obviously don't have the 40-man roster bandwidth to protect all of these. Would any of them be able to stick on a MLB active roster for a full season?
A+: Eugene Emeralds defeated the Everett Aquasox 7-4.
Jared Dupere RF- 3 for 4, HR(12). BA= .246.
Zach Morgan C- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .292.
Andrew Kachel 1B- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB. BA= .250.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.96.
Matt Mikulski LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.75.
Trevor McDonald is another tough Rule 5 decision coming up. Mikulski has had a rough two seasons.
A: Stockton Ports pounded the San Jose Giants 13-5.
Bryce Eldridge RF- 0 for 2, 3 BB. BA= .293.
Justin Wishkoski 1B- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .209.
Charlie Szykowny 3B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .239.
Trent Harris RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Luis Moreno RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.18.
Would be interested in a list of rule 5 eligible, where they are and stats. I understand your point about Meckler and think Ramos is getting the Belt treatment. But not sure who else falls into that category. I hope Z cuts some folks to make room for the kids. We have a lot of so so pitchers and we need to start circling the rookies (Winn, Beck) into the rotation. Even if it is dead money.

It's super hard work to put together a full list of Rule 5 eligibles. You pretty much have to go through all the minor league rosters and look up when they were drafted or signed. The way I visualize it it's 4 years of service time for college draftees and 5 years for HS draftees and most international signings.
DeleteIt is a fairly big number. From
Deletehttps://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/giants
They show 45 R5 players from 21.8 yo (Roberto Monegro, Complex) to several over 29.
One of the oldest R5 players is Armando Alvarez (29.2) banging the ball in Sacramento and mentioned by Doc 12 times, most recently Saturday. He is 2nd to Fitzgerald in HRs with a third fewer PAs and much better contact. He may be 1B only, RH B/T.
Very nice numbers in 265 PAs: .316/.377/.590/.967
wood and junis are likely goners, stripling may opt out due to his IL beef, hjelle, wisely, and villar are other guys on the 40-man roster i can see getting purged this offseason
DeleteFangraphs Giants roster resource list r5 eligibility and timing by player/level. Likely the easiest way to keep track as long as its info is up to date.
DeleteAlong those lines, I did a brief eyeball on the minor league rosters. From what I can see, at AAA the only position player I am concerned about looks like Tyler Fitzgerald SS-CF. (Luis Gonzales LF and Bryce Johnson CF would either be eligible or FAs, not sure you FA rules work. But since both cleared waivers its hard to see someone taking either in Rule 5.)
ReplyDeleteAmong AAA pitchers there again would be Nick Avila RHP, Erik Miller LHP, Kai-Wei Teng LHP, and Chris Wright LHP. (Maybe Melvin Adon RHP unless he's a FA.) I could see Avila, Miller, Teng, and maybe even Wright taken in Rule 5 if not protected.
Below there seems to be there look to be Will Wilson 2B, Hunter Bishop OF, Logan Wyatt IB, Carter Aldrete 2B, Ismael Munguia OF, Blake Rivera RHP (if he's still really with them). I don't think any will be selected or that they'll be protected. (Pretty embarrassing for the scouting dept. as to Wilson, Wyatt, and arguably Bishop.)
There's a whole group of players whose names come up occasionally but actually look to me like they have one more year before Rule 5 eligibility, and I sure hope I'm counting right Victor Bericoto 1B, Ryan Murphy RHP, Will Jensen RHP, Tyler Myrick RHP, Carson Seymour RHP.
If I have that right, it seems to me the biggest roster decisions will be Fitzgerald, Avila, Miller, & Teng.
P.S. I forgot Trevor McDonald RHP. He's definitely eligible and I suspect will be protected.
