Scouting the 2023 Draft: Hurston Waldrep

 Hurston Waldrep RHP.  DOB:  3/1/2002.  6'2", 205 lbs.  College(Florida).

2022(So. Miss):  6-2, 3.20, 90 IP, 33 BB, 140 K.

After a strong sophomore season at Southern Mississippi, Waldrep transferred to Florida for his junior season.  MLB Pipeline scouting report has him with a mid-high 90's FB, a hard slider that generates a 55% miss rate and a changeup with sink and face.  3 pitches that are at least above average.  Video shows arms long for height with loose arm action.  Some effort in the delivery.

  1. A couple of disparate comments/questions:
Max Clark, #4 on your list, Doc, is 18 yo, an impressive candidate, and if drafted needs to be protected in 5 years, or the millions of bonus money and the training investment is lost (for $100K), as you have pointed out. That's within the time frame that the Giants hope to be competitive. Would they be able to spare a 40-man spot while fighting for a post season?
Perhaps it's not a problem – he'll probably be off the board or deemed unsignable, but worth a later round pick ala Kyle Harrison if enough money can be waved at him. The $$ may well be "risk-able" considering the Giants lack of draft success. Do you think he would last to #16 considering the draft risk? Or is he out of the question?
Second, FZ signed free agent 1B Ronald Guzmán to a minor league contract today. He looks like a 9-month younger clone of LaMonte Wade Jr. – is this to light a fire under the latter in Spring Training? Wade has a signed $1.38M contract – where would he go if Guzmán clearly has a better Spring?
With no roster-room and still another, elder, potential 1B rostermate, Wilmer Flores, what's this all about?
Seems there's quite an infield conundrum with Craw and a bunch of non-SS wannabees!

    1. This is a very early Draft Board. Very likely to change dramatically between now and the draft. In general, college players are late risers on draft boards as the reality of cost vs risk sets in. Whether it's Clark or someone else, IMO, targeting a HS stud who falls can be a very good strategy for teams drafting in the 15-20 range.

    2. Although the the Giants have infielders who I like as individual players such as Villar, Davis, Estrada and even Wade Jr., I don't like the way the infield part of the roster is constructed. I am afraid FZ's obsession with stockpiling corner bats leaves them woefully thin up the middle.
