Late Breaking Hot Stove League News: Giants Sign Carlos Correa!

Late word from multiple reliable sources have the Giants agreeing to terms with Carlos Correa SS for 13 yrs/$350 M.  Wow!  Impressive and scary!  I think this deal pretty much clinches the 2022/2023 Hot Stove League Championship for the Giants and Farhan Zaidi.  I am at a loss for words right now.  I might not have time for a full post on it until tomorrow evening but I am sure I will have plenty to say.

  1. I have more add for a future Dr. B post but can say I am excited about our off-season moves and can’t wait to attend our home opener next year!

  2. This might be better suited for a follow up post by Dr. B but what’s our future lineup and defensive outlook with this signing? Does Luciano now have to move elsewhere? LF, 3B?! How does that affect Schmitt? Both trade bait?

    1. This means Schmitt should play 3rd. Villar 1st. Belt gone. Crawford gone after this season. Luciano, 2nd. But he's still more than a season away. Of course, FZ will probably trade them all and leave us scratching our heads.

  3. I’m in!!! Was ready to burn all my Giants gear and didn’t really want Correa but as soon as I heard the news I felt nothing but joy. This is a team I can support proudly. Thank you Farhan for FINALLY doing it!

  4. Kudos to Farhan and the Giants' ownership for making this move. Correa is younger than Judge and this contract is 4 years longer and $10 million less. Not sure the 4 years longer is that much of a plus, since he is signed to age 41. As to the money, I used to care about the amount being spent - but, it isn't my money and if the Johnson family is spending all this money on players, then maybe they have less to donate to other causes.

  5. Full no trade/no opt out: how happy will the most avid fan be in the out years at a prorated $27M per?
It will be a drag but hurRAH-hurRAH 'til then.
Even inflation wracked dollars will be worth something in the late 2020's & early 2030's.
At nearly 83 yo – 95 in his last year, no worries here!

    1. I figured out I will be 79 yo when Correa gets his last paycheck from this deal. No guarantee I will even be around to see that happen so why am I worried about what the back-end of the deal looks like?

    2. You the doc – you better be here! I'm in good heath for my age but I'd be quite surprised to see 2030.

  6. Angels strike with a classic Faidi contract: Noah Syndergaard signed a 1-year / $21,000,000 prove it deal!
Seemed like FZ might have done this – perhaps he was busy elsewhere or celebrating overnight.
Giants earlier signed Ross Stripling, so that makes quite an impressive quintet with MLBTR's ratings #2 Carlos Correa, #17 Sean Manaea, #20 Mitch Haniger, #34 Joc Pederson, & #38 Ross Stripling.
Nice haul for yesterday's hand-ringers! It's been bad enough here on Doc's blog but comments on The Athletic have been even worse.
And He may not be done.

  7. Teams really seem to be shifting to a long-term financing thing. The AAV here is about $26 million, which doesn't really deplete the annual under-the-cap budget too hard. But even if all goes well the Giants will get only maybe six or seven good years out of him. If they're super lucky they'll get maybe three more serviceable DH years, but that seems like wishful thinking. So reducing for time value and inflation, this is probably more comparable to a nearer term (if not present) value of maybe $40 million for six years, spread out over 13. Like Dr. B, I may well not outlast the contract. I'm pretty sure Farhan won't, professionally speaking, so maybe Pete Putila or someone will need to carry it at the end.

From Carlos's standpoint, those last years may get taxed in Puerto Rico - with minimal tax, both state and federal, a long way in every respect from California.

I also bet Boras's fee is both immediate and based on the gross value.
