DrB's 2023 Giants Top 50 Prospects

For better or worse, here is my final 2023 Giants Top 50 Prospects list.  I appreciate the suggestions after the preliminary list.  This list reflects some of those excellent points.  I added Will Wilson and Will Bednar.  I'm probably putting this out a few days too soon since we still have to see who gets dropped from the 40-man roster after Micheal Conforto OF and Taylor Rogers LHP formally sign, but with The Churn always active, there is always a risk of a drop or trade messing with the list.  I would say the list is still thin at the top, mostly due to disappointing performances by first round draft picks, but much deeper than in recent years due to strong performances by lower round picks, NDFA's, international prospects and of course The Churn.

  1. Although he had a modest major league presence this season, would you think Hjelle should be on this list or has he graduated?

    1. I thought Hjelle graduated but looking at his stat lines he only has 25 MLB IP so is technically still a prospect. Hmm.....I love Sean Hjelle as a prospect so he would be quite high on the list. Maybe even as high as #2 or 3! Maybe rather than redo the whole list I will do a separate profile on him.

  3. Thank you as always for the time and effort you put into your posts and your prospect lists. Did you leave Ryan Reckley off because he had a poor showing in his brief stint in the DSL, or was he just forgotten. Probably at least an Honorable Mention. APGiantsfan

    1. I did not include any DSL players. May do a Dominican Dandies post on some of them later. Not sure what to make of Reckley. He was on the young side even for the DSL but the performance was so bad(granted SSS and seemed to be cut short by an injur, but THAT s not a good sign either.

  4. Heck of a fall for Ramos. I remember the days when we salivated over him and couldn't wait to call him up. Hitting .227 in the PCL last year was pretty bad and then coming up with -0.5 bWAR in his limited time in the majors was another major damper.

    1. This is probably a make-or-break year for Heliot.

  5. It's great having a new list – something to dream on, especially with nothing to really bite on this post-Christmas.
One thing that shouldn't be done with a shiny new list is look back at former shiny new lists. Don't do it. Baseball is humbling.
The gulf between "Promise" and "Performance" – getting to the Show is a grinding, unforgivable process. Many are called but few are chosen.
    For example, Sunday, November 27, 2016, DrB's 2017 Giants Top 50 Prospects:
    1. Christian Arroyo, IF
    2. Tyler Beede, RHP
    3. Bryan Reynolds, OF
    4. Ty Blach, LHP
    5. Austin Slater, OF
    6. Steven Duggar, OF
    7. Andrew Suarez, LHP
    8. Chris Shaw, 1B
    9. Heath Quinn, OF
    10. Sandro Fabian, OF
    29. Reyes Maronta, RHP
Honorable Mention (no particular order): Logan Webb RHP, Tyler Rogers RHP
    First posted comment:
Anonymous November 27, 2016 at 5:37 PM "Tyler Rogers?"
    Another:
Anonymous November 28, 2016 at 3:36 AM "I have to put Beede above Arroyo... Hunter Cole deserves to be higher. Sure, he's limited to LF; but I like him better than Slater (more power at similar level)...Really, I think if I had to put my money on just one of our outfield prospects, I'd probably go with Heath Quinn."

Two observations: It's probably best to comment as "Anonymous" and why did the Pirates have to want Reynolds?

One more thing, yours truly has a comment way down the way, as Anonymous. Kinda glad it was Anonymous although the Doc didn't blow it off, even gave it a little credit!
    LOL

    1. Can't fault the Pirates for wanting Reynolds. Have to fault the Giants for sending him. I could be wrong, but I gotta believe that the McCutchen deal could have been done without him.

    2. IMO, it's way past time for us to stipulate that the McCutchen-Reynolds trade was not a good trade. Over the years, the Sabes-Evans regime made way more good trades than bad. Every GM has his trades he/she would like to take back.

    3. ... why did the Pirates have to want Reynolds ...
      Irony

  6. A just for fun question, is there a not so obvious prospect that you are high on who you think might have a breakout 2023 season? Casey Schmidt had a break out 2022 season and is now one of their top prospects. Happy New year everyone!

  7. Just pointing out you have Zack Morgan, C at 47 and also Zach Morgan, C in HM.

    1. Gotta respect and appreciate folks who read that carefully. I guess I could have put Sean Hjelle somewhere in the top 5 and moved everybody else down a notch until we got to #47 and dropped THAT Zack Morgan. But since we've already profiled Hjelle as a wild card we'll just drop the HM Morgan.
