Spring Training Update: Intrasquad Day

Things are still quiet at the Giants spring training camp in Scottsdale, AZ, which is a good thing.  We all know about Matt Cain's seemingly minor setback to have a ruptured cyst removed from his arm.  He's still expected to start throwing in 10 days from the surgery, which is in less than a week now.  He should have no trouble being ready for his first start, which probably won't come until the season is close to a week old.

In a slightly more worrisome development, Hunter Pence pulled up lame in a baserunning drill.  Now, Pence is not the kind of guy who is going to fake an injury to get out of a running drill, so this one set off alarm bells.  Seems to be a mild Achilles Tendonitis that is already improving.  The Giants insisted he get an MRI he didn't want as a precaution.  He'd probably be playing if it was the regular season, but the thing about tendonitis, it tends to recur, so that's something to fret about if you are looking for something to fret about.

It's Intrasquad Day as the Giants get ready to start exhibition games.  Today's lineups are lean heavily on NRI types, but there are some interesting names nonetheless.  If you are a prospect watcher, this actually might be the most interesting game of the spring!

TEAM RANDY WINN

1.  Hak-Ju Lee SS
2.  Gorkys Hernandez CF
3.  Conor Gillaspie 1B
4.  Jarrett Parker RF
5.  Grant Green LF
6.  Matt Winn C
7.  Ehire Adrianza 3B
8.  Ramiro Pena 2B
9.  Tyler Beede P

TEAM SHAWON DUNSTON

1.  Ryan Lollis RF
2.  Christian Arroyo SS
3.  Mac Williamson LF
4.  Kyle Blanks 1B
5.  Ryder Jones 3B
6.  Aramis Garcia C
7.  Rando Moreno 2B
8.  Junior Arias CF
9.  Chase Johnson P

I've always been fascinated by lineups and man, it sure feels good to write those out.  Got 'em from a tweet on Extra Baggs.  We probably won't get any detailed records of this game which will likely not go more than 3-4 innings like a boxscore or anything, but how excited are you to see two teams take the field?  Play Ball!

  1. I forgot Junior Arias was in camp. I watched him for a couple summers in Pioneer Rookie ball in Billings, MT. I have to admit he didn't stand out to me, but that's been four or five years ago now.

I know roster spots are tight, but I would love to see Grant Green or Connor Gillaspie get a chance. I've always liked the offensive potential of both those guys, especially Green. The Giants have been looking for a super utility type for a while now, and he really fits that mold if he can provide any offense.

Can't wait for these games to get going!

  2. And the first ST games on MLB network today. OK, they don't count, but it's wonderful to have baseball back after the long winter.

  3. Fun fiction out of Fort Meyers regarding Pablo's off-season "12-Hour a day, six day a week" workout regimen:

Sandoval would set his alarm for 4:30 a.m. from Monday through Saturday. His morning workout ran from 5 a.m. to 7:30, following by a hitting session (emphasizing his right-handed swing starting in mid-November) from 8 a.m. to about 9 or 9:30, followed by yoga at 11 a.m., rest, and then an afternoon lift from 3-5 p.m., a 12-hour, six-day-a-week routine
