Spring Training Game Wrap 3/3/2016: Brewers 8 Giants 7

The BrewCrew jumped on Jake Peavy for 6 runs in the first two innings.  The Giants got dingers from Kyle Blanks and Andrew Susac to tie it up, and the Brewers won the last 3 innings 2-1.  Key Lines:

Kyle Blanks 1B- 1 for 1, HR(1), 2 HR.  BA= 1.000.  Blanks has been destroying baseballs when healthy for the past 2 seasons.  If he continues to be healthy, it will be difficult to keep him off the Opening Day roster.

Grant Green PR-1B- 2 for 2, SB(1).  BA= .750.  Former first round draft pick of the A's, off to a nice start to the Cactus League. Position flexibility may give him a leg up.

Andrew Susac C- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .333.  The dinger came off a sidearming RHP, something Susac doesn't think he could have done after the wrist injury last year.

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 2, 2B BB.  BA= .750.  The Giants love their CF's and Gorkys can play CF.  He's caught the manager's eye early on.

Jake Peavy RHP- 1.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB 2 K's.  ERA= 27.00.  Rough outing, but Peavy says he feels good, which was not true last spring.

Joan Gregorio RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Big time sleeper in the system.  Video showed an nice slider for one of the K's.

Ty Blach LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  2 efficient innings for Blach.  More of those will put him on the radar for a future callup.  Struck out RH batter Domingo Santana on a nice breaking ball in the dirt.

Josh Osich- 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 18.00.  Osich had a rough inning, but got out of it on a GIDP immediately after a mound visit by Rags.

Hunter Strickland RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  I guess the only question remaining about Strickland is if he will be the closer by the end of the season.

Around the League:

Big news out of the Dodgers camp with Brett Anderson undergoing spinal surgery.  He'll miss 3-5 months and the Dodgers offseason continues to turn to ashes.  Anderson accepted his $15 8 M QO.  He probably had been #2 on the Dodgers SP depth chart.  Their rotation now goes Kershaw, Kazmir, Maeda, Alex Wood?  Ryu?  Bolsinger?  Da Bums do have some highly ranked pitching prospects they might have to call on before they really want to.

Cameron Maybin, who the Tigers acquired in trade this offseason, will miss 4-6 weeks with a fracture in the hand from a HBP in the first game of spring training.  Maybin was slated to platoon with lefty-hitting Anthony Gose which may be of interest to fantasy owners who are looking for cheap steals.

Another potential source of steals, OF Jarrod Dyson of KC is out 6 weeks with an oblique strain which will place him on the DL to start the season.

  1. definitely interesting to see camp battles, especially when we're largely set:

Susac v. Brown v. OF Blanks-- I certainly hope and think Susac gets the nod as the second. I find it tough to keep Brown at that point as he'd be the 3rd guy and not get a lot of playing time, as opposed to going to AAA where he will. Just seems to make more sense. Especially if Blanks can keep a hot hand and play 1b too.

Blanco v. Gorkys v. Blanks-- First, see above. I guess the interesting thing is do you think Gorkys can beat out Blanco (or does Gorkys have an option to go down).

RP--I wonder if Broadway will beat out Kontos.

  2. Glad to see Susac can swing the bat well, again, as wrist injuries can linger. Gregorio looks to have put on some weight.

Blanks and Hernandez are interesting as they have both been Top-100 prospects. From what I've read, Blanks can't stay healthy, has tremendous power coupled with MLB average defense in LF/RF & 1B. Hernandez seems to be great with the legs & glove but weak with the bat and hasn't yet shown himself to be, at the MLB level, as anything more than a defensive replacement. Anyway, nice start for both of them. But Spring Training and the regular season are long and they both have a lot to prove on a club with very few openings.

THe Dodgers news is, to me, more interesting. According to the Dodgers columnist I read at ESPN, Anderson was #4. The nominal season opening Dodger rotation being: Kershaw, Kazmir, Maeda, Anderson & Wood. Their top-2 replacement candidates also have issues. Ryu has shoulder issues and isn't expected to be back until May. McCarthy isn't expected to be back from Tommy John rehab until July.

And while I feel for Anderson and would never wish injury on him, or any other player, my two favorite baseball things are (a) rooting for the Giants and (b) rooting against the Dodgers. So there is a certain amount of schadenfreude with that announcement.

    1. The best part of the Anderson news is watching Dave Cameron having to eat his own words over on Fangraphs.
