Down on the Farm: 7/24/2013

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees edged the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .243.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .333.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K's  ERA= 3.60.

Not a bad spot start for Mejia.  Salt Lake City is a tough, tough place to pitch.  If the Giants consider Sanchez a long term option, they need to leave him put in Fresno and give him the majority of starts behind the plate the rest of the way.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outhit the Erie Seawolves 10-9:

Joe Panik- 2 for 5.  BA= .257.
Javier Herrera(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .301.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .276.
Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .292.

Panik is hitting .368 over his last 10 games.  Angel V is hitting .317 over his last 10 albeit with a .317 OBP.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks edged the San Jose Giants 8-7:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .231.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .372.
Elliott Blair(CF-1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .234.
Myles Schroder(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .265.
Nick Vander Tuig(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 11.57.

Lancaster is a pretty rude greeting for any pitcher making their first pro start and second pro appearance.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Hillsboro Hops 4-1:

Brian Ragira(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .275.
Pat Young(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Good to see Ragira in the OF.  Yes, this is Pat Young and he's the same dude who made a few appearances under the name Matt Young in Arizona.

Rookie AZL  D'Backs defeated the Giants 6-3:

Cristian Paulino(CF)- 2 for 4, HR(2), SB(4), Assist(3B).  BA= .306.

Marvin Barrios, Emmanuel DeJesus and Rayan Hernandez made pitching appearances in this game with below average results.

DSL  Giants beat the Orioles1 5-3:

Gustavo Cabrera(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .202.
Marco Guzman(SS)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .265.
Richard Rodriguez(2B)- 3 for 4.  BA= .239.
Jonathan Loaisiga(RHP)- 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.32.
Jose Morel(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(3).  ERA= 1.32.

  1. Yah, that's never been Angel's strong suit, getting walks. If he can hit and hit for a lot of power, hopefully he can pick up walks along the way via IBB.

Agree with you on Hanchez, this has been a lost season for him, being on the DL for so long, they should just leave him down there and pick up a lot of ABs and experience behind the plate, particularly since the MLB season isn't getting any better lately.

Do you think that Panik will get promoted to AAA next season, or if they will put him through that again?

  2. Very nice to see Ragira in the OF! Looks like Pat Young is getting stretched out. Gustavo over the Mendoza line, I think that might be his first 3 hit game of his career.

I'd say Lancaster is a far cry from the big field of Omaha, for sure. I'm standing by my call: Vander Tuig is going to be the steal of the entire draft, and a big fat lesson that manipulating the draft and saving money to chase 2nd tier HS bonus babies is a suckers bet.

Panik hopefully will do what he did in SJ. Finish the season en fuego. He dug a hole for himself though, it'll be hard to get to .300 with that many ABs already logged.

    1. MILB.tv wasn't working for most of Mejia's start, but I did see his 3rd inning. Wow, it's so much cool to see some these guys in live action, albeit from a computer screen. But Mejia is a sturdy fella who has a very mature build for a kid his age! He's all legs, but his upper body is good size too. I couldn't figure out who he reminded me of, maybe a little bit of Liriano. The first HR he gave up came on a 3-1 breaking ball against a LHH. He kept trying the corner, just missing on 3 straight fastballs. Came back in with the breaker, and it was sent over the fence. I thought he looked very good overall, given the circumstances. Pretty cool stuff!

    2. I wouldn't give up Crick or Mejia for anything. Gregorio is getting to that point. I'd round out the top 5 with Agosta and Blackburn but this Mella cat looks like he'll have some serious helium.

The advantage of pitching depth is you can play coy on who's on your no-trade list when teams come knocking. The Giants have a pretty fine record with this. And losing Wheeler helps. That's the only silver lining on that. Well also the fact he's giving up HRs and walking fools, 1.5 WHIP and 1.5 HR/9 so far. Just like the Giants big league pitchers!

    3. I will never complain about having too much pitching depth ever again...if I ever did before.

  3. Does anybody know what prompted Mejia's promotion? Not questioning it, I was just surprised to see him skip AA.
