Down on the Farm: 7/23/2013

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4:

Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .307.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .272.
Francisco Peguero(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .314.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .324.

The Bees hit 4 HR's including 3 by Kole Calhoun.  Adrianza stays hot.

AA  Erie Seawolves beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1:

Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .255.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .244.
Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.32.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks defeated the San Jose Giants 7-4:

Kyle Crick(RHP)- 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.33.

Crick needs a few games like this where he learns to just grind it out.  Lancaster is a very tough place to pitch.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets pounded the Asheville Tourists 10-3:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 2, Sac, SB(49).  BA= .275.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 4 for 6, 3 2B.  BA= .244.
Joey Rapp(1B)- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .232.
Ben Turner(C)- 3 for 5.  BA= .259.
Charles Jones(RF)- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .228.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.97.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Players have accumulate enough AB's that 1 big game does not move the BA all that much.  Rooting for Chuckie Jones to keep it going.

Short Season  Hillsboro Hops outhit the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 9-6:

Hollick(.301), Bednar(.287), Sy(.282), Horan(.264), Ross(.286)- 2 hits each.

Horan had a double while Sy(9), and Bednar(4) had a SB each.

Rooke AZL Giants blanked the Reds 6-0:

Christian Arroyo(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .307.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .434.
Julio Pena(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .265.
Jonah Arenado(DH)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .200.
Ryan Vogelsong(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.49.
Carlos Alvarado(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.80.

Good to see Vogie on the comeback trail.  With the way Gaudin has pitched, not sure I want him back in the rotation!

DSL Giants edged the White Sox 8-7:

Gustavo Cabrera(CF)- 1 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .182.
Carlos Valdez(LF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .277.
Nathanael Javier(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .212.
Miguel Gomez(DH)- 4 for 5.  BA= .348.

Check out a nice post about Matt Duffy over on Cove Chatter linked to the left.

  1. Heh Doc;
Any word on what the injury is for Dan Slania?
    His status is showing "rehab".
I must have been sleeping, never heard he signed or what his slot was.

    1. Signed for slot. They're most likely just resting him or working on mechanics. He had a crazy big pitch game from the ND coach this season.

  2. Thank you for the kind words DrB. Very nice nights for Arroyo and Javier. Escobar holding his own in AA, Crick with only 1 walk! Any chance Ryder or Arroyo spend a few weeks in S-K before the season is over?

  3. To me, Vogelsong returning to the team is endangering Zito spot in the rotation, not Gaudin. Though with the way the team has been handling the pitchers with greater caution (at least publicly, by starting with Gaudin and stating giving Cain and Lincecum an extra day), perhaps they will finally go with a 6 man rotation at least once, to give the starters an extra day when there is a long stretch of games.

However, that would screw up the current alignment that right now would pit Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum against LA twice, plus facing COL and AZ, all the teams above us.

    1. I would say Bochy is really losing his patience with Zito, and that is a good guide to how the Gigantes view his option/buyout. Bochy has been yanking him with no regard. I like that about Boch. Dusty Baker would be all about getting him the W, leaving him in to be shelled. Bochy hasn't managed with urgency yet, but its a long season. I think the last couple of weeks, when the Gints have had a rare lead, he's been on it.

Its not looking exactly good for the Giants, but look at who has taken turns being the hottest team in baseball - the Jays, the Dodgers, the Mariners. Maybe its the Gigantes turn next. 6 1/2 out sounds a bit gloomy, and 10 1/2 out and tied with the lowly Mets for the wild card sounds gloomier... but stranger things have happened.

Zito is looking definite low-man on the totem.

    2. Yes, I agree that Bochy has been losing his patience with Zito and that reflects how the team views his option (not...). I think Gaudin's great pitching is what put Zito on the hot seat, as then for 2014, the Giants are looking at Cain, Bumgarner, Vogelsong, and Gaudin, plus battle for the 5th starter, Kickham, Surkamp, whoever else steps up to the plate, or maybe even resigning Lincecum, who they will definitely QO and pursue.

Dusty would have been all about massaging the player's ego, the bigger the player, the bigger the massage job, so the game would have been lost by the time he gave him the hook. Bochy typically gives a lot of rope as long as we are close, but this far back, he's been much more protective of any leads. That one of many reasons I appreciate Bochy so much, he understands that each game needs to be managed differently depending upon the circumstances, and not be stuck to certain rules and ways things have always been handled. He's more like the father than a player's buddy.

Don't forget, the Giants were pretty hot early on, 23-15, and at one point was 13-12, so the Giants went on a 10-3 streak, and it was against AZ and LAD, plus ATL at the end of that streak. Unfortunately, they also led up to that streak with a 5 game losing streak, including 3 straight to the Padres.

I'm still mildly encouraged. Yes, anytime you are down at least 5 games, it is grim, but Belt, Posey, and Sandoval has been hot, and Crawford appears to be heating up as well, and Pence has recently been doing that "can't hit with nobody on, can hit with RISP" batting he did last season for us, poor batting line in past four weeks but second on team in ribbies.

And he's wiped off the cobwebs during the break, he has been hot since the break, hitting .381/.435/.381/.816, wow, no power, but getting on a ton! Unfortunately, only 1 run scored, and two RBIs in 6 games. Well, in any case, hopefully he's just warming up, figuring out the hitting first then kicking in the power.

Now if Blanco or Scutaro or both can heat up, the lineup should be producing runs like crazy once again. That plus OK pitching overall and superior bullpen, should bring us back into the race. They need to win three of the next four to get to 6-4 for the home stand, and just work from there. .667 at home (a win each series) and .500 on the road would bring them to 36-26, 82-80. If both LA and AZ both play closer to their overall record - due to Hanley and Corbin playing closer to mean - that should be enough to put the Giants in the thick of the race.

I know, that's a lot of ifs, but that's true for any team this far back. I think it's doable, but if it's going to happen, it will have to happen game to game, week to week, it is not likely they will run off a big win streak, but a big losing streak definitely would seal the coffin.

    3. I'm not quite buying these Giants are about done with Zito theories. Sounds a lot like wishful thinking to me.

    4. I agree that they are theories, and maybe wishful thinking, but even with his poor start today, Gaudin has been a good starter for us this season and Vogelsong will be returning soon, and that creates a situation for 6 starters, but only 5 starts. Unless Gaudin continues to throw disaster starts like today until Vogelsong returns, I just don't see how he gets pushed out sooner than Zito, the Giants do not generally reward vets with a starting position when another younger player is outperforming him. Like when Dave Roberts came back and they let Freddy Lewis continue to start.

And Zito has been struggling for his last 5 starts and, really, wow, since his third start of the season, he has a 5.65 ERA since that game, only 63 K in 94.0 IP, but 40 walks, .326/.393/.484/.877 OPS since then.

Wow, I knew he was struggling, but looking in-depth at all the starts really makes it very stark that Zito has not been pitching well at all this season, since his first two good starts, and I guess 3 of the first 4 starts were good, so I guess we could start this from his 5th start: 5.34 ERA, 84.1 IP, 37 walks, 54 K's, .328/.395/.484/.879, pretty much the same numbers, just bad all the way around.

Sure, he has had a start or two of low ER during the season, but sabermetrically, just a lot of walks, not as many K's, lots of hits in lots of games. He's lucky to only have a 4.92 ERA, the bullpen probably saved his bacon a number of times.

It may be a theory, but most are, and I'm trying to support it with numbers that makes logical sense. Meanwhile, Gaudin has 4 DOM starts in 8, but now 3 DIS starts too, so that is his negative. At least he has been giving us very good starts in half of his starts, that is more than Zito has been giving us, even if we go by traditional QS standards, he has only 6 in 20 starts, but 11 starts that I would call bad starts.

This would also explain the pursuit of another starter, most thought it was related to moving Lincecum into the bullpen, but I think the better explanation now is that they were wanting to move Zito out of the rotation.

    5. Who is pursuing another starter? The Giants have denied that they made any offers for Garza and I don't know of anyone else they have really been linked to.

Yes, there is the history of Zito being left off the playoff roster, but I would not hold your breath until he's DFA'd and he ain't a reliever.

Not saying it won't happen. I'm just not quite buying it yet.

    6. I was not referring to the Garza rumor, I was referring to the references to the Giants pursuing a starter that the beat writers have been saying for a while, at least that is what I remember. No links to any pitcher that I'm aware of, but a number of articles have been written by the beats on this, I thought. But my memory hasn't been the best lately.

I'm not referring to his being left off the roster, I actually did not even include that in my thought process, though I probably should have.

I am referring to Zito not pitching that well for most of this season, unlike 2010 when he actually was a good pitcher for most of the season until the very end, remember, he was a part of the 20 or so game streak where the Giants held opponents under 4 runs (or something like that). Unlike most, I've been sanguine about Zito, I've been defending the Giants decision to keep Zito throughout most of his contract and agreed with you when you suggested that the Giants might keep Zito by picking up his option, who ever thought that would even be considered, and yet he had pitched well enough up to this season to engender such thought.

But he has not had it at all this season. At least Cain and Lincecum can deliver good starts regularly this season (while giving up the big disaster starts that kills a pitcher's ERA). Zito has been pretty bad all season long, since his first four starts he has not really had any stretch of good pitching. His ERA is only as low as it is because Bochy has been good about taking him out early to allow the bullpen to keep the Giants close.

And I know I'm only speculating and that not everyone is going to buy it. But the more I look at his starts, the more I'm convinced that the Giants is looking to replace him.

For an old precedence that I would point to, it would not be his 2010 playoff roster issue, but the Giants paying Livan's $4M contract (big back then) to get rid of him to Expos and their release of Rowand in 2011 when he still had roughly $14M left on the contract. While the Giants are actually a good 9-11 (everything is relative right now) in Zito starts, that is in spite of his pitching.

Let's put it this way, push comes to shove in the rotation, who goes? Zito is the most logical to go, to me, at this moment. If Gaudin pitches like this up to Vogie getting activated, I'll agree that he's the one to go, but if he pitches as well as he's been doing prior to this poor start, then Zito is the low man on the totem pole, in my opinion.

    7. As far as I know, no beat writer has written that the Giants are pursuing a starter. There's been a small amount of speculative stuff on MLBTR, but that's not the Giants beat writers. In fact, the main thing guys like Schulman have done is put down those kinds of rumors.

  4. Report from Visalia on Dr. B's White Whale - Andrew Barbosa - he threw 5 innings of 1 hit ball and struck out 10 Stockton Ports. He was painting the corners as he had several Port batters shaking their heads at the umpire's call following called 3rd strikes. He was also effective with his change up. The only hit he surrendered was a very high chopper down the 3rd base line that was snagged and thrown to 1st with a fast runner just beating the throw. I know it hurts. APGiantsfan

    1. Giants white whale too, how many times did they draft him and tried to sign him? Seemed like it was forever. Would love to know the story of how that went down, or rather didn't go down.
