Down on the Farm: 6/10/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Tucson Padres 10-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .220.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .600.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SF.  BA= .295.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 3 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .326.
Kensuke Tanaka(2B)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .317.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Steve Edlefsen(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.43.
Sandy Rosario(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.78.

Maybe Gary Brown heard us talking about him?  That's 6 hits in 8 AB over his last 2 games.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A  Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 6-2 in 10 innings:

Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 3.16.

Marte has not been able to get traction to his career due to injuries.  When I've seen him pitch, I like him as a back-of-the-rotation starter.  Hits 91-93 on the radar gun with a nice 3 pitch mix.  Reminds me a bit of Odalis Perez who used to pitch for the Dodgers.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets vs Kannapolis Intimidators rained out.

DSL  Giants edged the D'Backs 6-5:

Jean Angomas(RF, 17 yo)- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Gustavo Cabrera(CF, 17 yo)- 1 for 4, 3B, SB(3).  BA= .156.
Nathanael Javier(3B, 17 yo)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .172.
Reymi Rodriguez(RHP, 18 yo)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

  1. I watched most of the Fresno game on tv last night. Brown looked good and relaxed at the plate. His homerun was in the late innings and was a no doubter to left. I was more impressed with his at bat in the bottom of the sixth. He got into a 1-2 hole and then worked the count full and then hit a double into the left center gap on a pitch that was low and a bit away but probably would have been called a strike. Noonan looked good in his first appearance as a Griz this year - he needs consistant at bats. Sanchez's homerun was a monster blast to right that cleared all the seats and landed deep in the concourse. Doug Greenwald said it was one of the longest homeruns he has seen at the park. Fleet looked good - not sure why he was pulled after only 4 innings. He has a smooth compact delivery. He ran into some trouble of his own making in the top of the fourth by walking the first two batters and then giving up a double - leaving men on second and third with no outs. He managed to get out of the jam without giving up any more runs. The Grizz played good baseball - adding to a 6-0 lead - twice they had runners on third with less than two outs and got the runs home - good fundamental baseball. APGiantsfan

  2. Funny how things work out. The SJ rotation, gonna be the best place in baseball to hang out! Blach, Blackburn and Escobar have stood tall, but Crick/Mejia's injuries have been a bit of a bummer. Nice to have Surkamp working back a tad early. With that development 12 different pitchers have taken the bump now.

The Giants have not cured Jeff Soptic's wildness: 22BB to 24K to 25 IP!

Marlowe and Strickland being hurt is further attrition. You need a lot of arms!

Don't look now but the Giants have 4 hitters in the top 20 of HRs for the California league.

    1. Thanks for the link to the article. Gee, Brown still looks like a little kid in a helmut too large for him in that picture.

That he's been working on modifying his swing mechanics fits in with how poorly he's hit this season, hopefully this is the start of him feeling comfortable at the plate.

  4. DrB - Saw your comments in Pav's blog. One thing I would hammer is how spoiled Giants fans have been with rapid success into the majors, like you did. If you comp draft classes, as few do, the Giants have their 2010-12 guys right on schedule.

There are stragglers from the 2006-08 classes, such as 2006: Brett Pill; 2007: Nick Noonan, Jackson Williams/Johnny Monell; Runzler/Edlefsen (and Brock Bond but the mean stupid Giants don't understaaaaand OBP); 2008: Kieschnick, Surkamp, Juan Perez and sleeper Justin Fitzgerald).

2009 has been used for trades with the exception of Belt, but you also have Dominguez, Heston, Gloor and Cavan as sleepers, and Jake Dunning as a possible move this year. Maybe more trades on that front?

So even before getting into the drafts where they don't have good pole position, there are guys who might fetch something from trade or make an impact. I pay close attention to who the Giants put on the 40. Noonan and Heston got big trade interest at the deadline last year. These might not be sexy top 100 names, but inside the game MLB teams are trying to peal them off...

Interesting note from Baggs twitter, the Giants were apparently very high on Wacha. Well, he got picked before they had a shot. Its been a while since two college pitchers jumped this quick, Gausman and Wacha look special. But those are rare birds right there.

    2. Amen Shankbone. Though I would note that most of these people also have selective and faulty memory. They seem to think that they were the ones who selected all these players and managed these players to two championships. I read those comments, they write like they did all that, not Sabean and Bochy. I would bet if we go back to the 2010 and 2012 seasons, many of them were down on what the Giants were doing, very critical. They seem to forget all the wrong suggestions and thoughts that they had previously.
