Scottsdale Scorpions downed the Phoenix Desert Dogs 11-4:
Charlie Culberson- 1 for 5, BB. BA= .400.
Brandon Belt- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .462.
This represents a higher level of competition for Culberson, who is handling it well so far. Belt just continues his awesomeness.
In other news, Kevin Pucetas was sent to the KC Royals organization as the PTBNL in the Jose Guillen trade. While Guillen didn't do all that much with the Giants and appears to have already punched his ticket out of the organization, he did have some big hits in a couple of games the Giants won. Let's see, two wins in a season that ended up being decided by 1 game? Yeah, I'll happily trade Kevin Pucetas for that. He's a guy who might have a ceiling as a #5 starter for a bad team, so maybe he gets a chance with the Royals? He's never going to be the kind of pitcher the Giants require at the MLB level.
The Giants also signed Jacob Blackwood, a 25 yo infielder who had a breakout season with the KC T-Bones and was named the independent Northern League's MVP. He hit .331 with 31 HR's. He was originally drafted in 2005 by the Mets, but didn't sign. He was redrafted in 2006 by the Florida Marlins and spent 4 seasons in their organization without a lot of success. He played mostly 2B and the Giants are pretty well stocked with second basemen, so it's not clear where he's going to fit into the organization.

Today, we should all focused on the Lincecum/Halladay match up, but still, do you think a strong performance of Belt in the AFL would change off season offer the Giants could make to Huff or does Belt is still too far away ?
Regarding Culberson, I just hope he isn't a Cal league creation, his afl debut seems to indicate he is not.

If I was making the decisions, and it's a good thing I'm not, I would want to see Brandon Belt get another 400-500 AB's in the minors before bringing him up. This is only his first professional season as he didn't even play short season ball last year. Belt is looking more and more like the real deal though. I would say the same thing for Thomas Neal who had a good season in AA, but not so great I'm ready to pencil him in as the Giants LF next year.
ReplyDeleteWith Culberson, we'll have to just wait and see. He needs to play a year in the EL to either toughen him up or expose him for maybe no being as good as the Cal League make him look.
Pucetas' trade opens a much needed spot on the 40-man roster, as well.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that Pucetas would have been cut anyway, so we have not lost anything.
Yes, Thomas Neal, at least, will have to be added to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. He would almost certainly be taken if left exposed. Not sure who all else is Rule 5 eligible this year. You really have to watch the international players as they often sign at age 16 or 17 and hit 5 years of experience by age 21 or 22.

ReplyDeleteI could be wrong but I thing Noonan, Culberson and Fairley have one more season before they have to be protected. As HS draftees, they get 5 years.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Clayton Tanner will be Rule 5 eligible which could be quite a tough choice for the Giants. He pitched well in AA, but his K and BB rates left a lot to be desired. What are the chances a team would take him and then keep him on the 25 man roster all season? If they did, would it be worth a 40 man roster spot for the Giants to protect him? Tough decision!
