Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .472.
Brandon Belt- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B. BA= .319.
Jason Stoffel- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 8.22

10/29/2010

Brandon Belt- 2 for 5.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 5, 2B.
Ryan Verdugo- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.25.

10/28/2010

Conor Gillaspie- 4 for 4, 2 HR. BA= .231.

10/27/2010

Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, 3B.

10/23/2010

Ryan Verdugo- 3 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K's.

Charlie Culberson is having a tremendous AFL hitting for both average and power. His overall line is .472/.500/.811 with 12 XBH's out of 25 hits.

Brandon Belt is having a good AFL campaign.

Gillaspie has struggled, but had one really good game with the 2 dingers.

It looks like Ryan Verdugo is being converted to starter and he has had two dominant outings in a row with 10 K's in 7 IP. Overall, he's 2-1, 2.25, 12 IP, 7 BB, 15 K's. I've seen Verdugo a couple of times with SJ. He has a nice 3 pitch repertoire with a FB that gets up to 92 MPH, a sharp breaking ball and a nice changeup that keeps hitters off balance. Control/command will be the challenge for him. I think he could move fast as his secondary stuff is quite advanced.

Stoffel is still very inconsistent. Paterson has had some OK relief outings, mostly 1 IP at a time.

  1. Thanks for this update, Doc. I'm a little disappointed with Stoffel. I thought he might be a guys who, if he picked up a second or third pitch, could be a dominant bullpen guy...possibly closer down the road. I think, at one point, you suggested having him start to slowly develop a more complete repertoire. I'd agree with this.

In regards to Verdugo, I'm impressed thus far. He's not someone I've paid much attention to, but his numbers obviously warrant consideration for prospect status...especially if he makes a successful transition to starting pitcher.

As for the names most people have been paying attention to, Culberson and Belt are providing a lot of hope for those that thought Posey and Bumgarner's promotions meant the end of the line for our revamped farm system. Where do you see these guys next year? I think Belt should get at least some more seasoning in Fresno. His ascent was pretty rapid, and I'd hate for the lack of minor league AB's to catch up with him in the bigs. As for Culberson, I'd love it he were ready to take over for Freddy in 2012. Half a year in Richmond, and finish out 2011 in Fresno? Or, possibly skip AA altogether, so as to avoid the death toll it takes on our offensive players, and let him play out in AAA?

  2. I think September callups for Culberson and Belt with real starting opportunities in 2012 are very realistic goals.

Not sure what the answer is with Stoffel. I do think if there is any hope for him at all, he needs to at least temporarily get out of the closer role and pitch more innings at a time, not necessarily starting, but at least 2-3 inning stretches. He needs better command of his fastball and at least 1 and preferably two secondary pitches.

  3. Yeah, thanks for the updates!

Look like Culberson and Belt are making up for some of the absence of the big boys, look good for making majors in 2012, I agree.

  4. Keith Law recently said that Charlie Culberson was the prospect who has done the most to change his mind about his status in the AFL. Says he has legit ability with the bat, but defensively has questions.

The Verdugo experiment will be very interesting to follow.

Stoffel is a complete enigma. He has the stuff. He has the peripheral stats. He just doesn't have the performance to back things up. Don't know if it's bad luck or he just doesn't have it between the ears. Hoping for the former, and I'm still high on him as a prospect.

Gillaspie is also an enigma - don't know how to feel about him as a prospect either. Certainly better than I do about Noonan, but that's not exactly high praise.

  5. Maybe Verdugo has always been a starter and the Giants just found his niche. He was a starter in community college and at LSU, one of the best in the SEC. His K's are always in the high 90's for the season, even as a reliever. I saw this kid pitch twice, once at the SEC Championship series and again this past summer in SJ. His fastball is electric and has movement from every angle. His changeup is damn legit. His BB's tend to be high, but he seems to always be able to manage scored runs. I am very interested to see where he lands.
