College Corner: A Couple More

While the upcoming MLB free agent draft is a bit thin at the top, it is loaded from about the beginning of the first supplemental round through rounds 5 or 6 at least, especially with college pitching. Here's a couple more college pitchers who haven't gotten a lot of attention who could be great value picks in round 2-3:

Jimmy Nelson, RHP, Alabama. 6'6", 235 lbs. Has come on strong late this season. Yesterday he threw his first complete game as a college pitchers and put up quite a line: 9 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 11 K's against a pretty good Mississippi team. His season line: 6-2, 4.17, 77.2 IP, 23 BB, 73 K's. I saw one mock draft that had the Giants taking him in the first round at #24, but it was just some fan writing a fanpost on a website. I haven't seen any other mocks with him in either the first round or supplemental round. To me, he could be a nice pick no earlier than round 2, possibly a great value in round 3.

Sam Dyson, RHP, South Carolina. 6'2", 195 lbs. Has been a frontline pitcher for the Gamecocks since he redshirted his freshman season, but hasn't been able to maintain dominance. He shutout a very good hitting Arkansas team yesterday 9 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. His season line: 5-4, 3.79, 76.0 IP, 16 BB, 79 K's. The A's picked him in round 10 as a draft eligible sophomore last year. He's improved both his K/9 and BB/9 this year and yesterday's start was impressive. Again, he could be a great value pick somewhere in the mid single digit rounds.
