A grand slam home run by Rafael Devers was not enough to overcome a rough start by Anthony Molina. Key Lines:
Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4, BB, SB(10), 2 R. BA= .286. Cox played the role of the classic leadoff hitter creating a run in the first inning. He singled to RF, stole 2B. After Devers popped out, Bryce Eldridge singled with Cox scoring from 2B. As the rest of the inning unfolded, Cox would not have scored without the SB.
Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 4, HR(36), BB, R, 4 RBI. BA= .258. Devers keeps his drive for 40 HR's alive. This one got the Giants back into the game and came off a LHP.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, RBI. BA= .270. 7 game hit streak, 19 game on-base streak.
Anthony Molina RHP- 3 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.24. First inning looked good, at least on Gameday(I don't get Apple TV). Molina had a 97 MPH FB mixing in a slider, curve and changeup. He gave up a couple of runs in the second inning then the roof caved in in the 3'rd. Tipping pitches?
Yunior Marte RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, 7/3 GO/AO. ERA= 2.45. Marte and Molina are the type of pitchers the Giants need to rebuild their pitching staff around whether in starting or relieving roles. This is the second 5-inning relief appearance in a row for Marte.
Cesar Perdomo LHP will try to build on his early MLB success today facing Michael King RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.00.
Love your blog Doc! Totally agree with your assessment of those young pitchers. I also would add that Apple TV has some really good shows. Slow Horses with Gary Oldman is amazing.

DeleteFWIW, in the SECOND round of the 2027 draft (and thereafter), the Giants have the 4th pick and a chance of 3rd depending on what they and the A's do in the rest of 2026 with 14 games each.
ReplyDeleteSF has a 2-game advantage today and the A's hold the tie breaker, so the Giants @ 62-86 now would have to finish 3 games worse the A's @ 60-88, but SF has the more difficult schedule.
I think Cox is pretty much sowing up a job starting somewhere in the outfield next year. He has something else no one else on the team has......old fashioned blazing speed. If he can keep a decent average and and on base percentage through 500 ABs his speed could be game changing.
ReplyDeleteAgree with your assessment of Molina and Marte. I'll add that Pavs said on hid recent podcast that they intend to get a closer. Good news. Seems obvious that's a need, but thought that was a need last off season but they never got one. Good that Randy Rodriguez will be back in 2027. also
ReplyDeleteThe Giants problem is pretty simple: the opponents outscore them.
ReplyDeleteThere are 2 possibilities: more offense or better pitching.
The Giants, in the draft and at the break, for the most part, traded off offense and went for future pitching.
What will they do this off-season?
The word is: a closer.
Given how many late leads are blown, the Giants better get someone for the 9th AND the 8th!
