As we have seen many times this season, individual Giants players did some good things on the field, just not enough players did enough good things. They had 6 hits and drew 6 walks. They stole 2 bases. They executed several bunts well. Anthony Molina had a Quality Start. They also had no XBH's and left 10 runners on base. In the end they came up short. Key Lines:
Anthony Molina RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.97. In his last start Molina came out after 5.2 IP. This time he got one more out and gets credit for a Quality Start. He's pitched at least 5 innings and given up 2 runs or less in 3 of his last 4 starts.
It's up to Cesar Perdomo LHP to get the series win today facing Connor Prielipp LHP who comes in with a 4.94 ERA.

Last night the ABs looked a little better than the line. Quite a few line drives with RISP ended up atem balls. No luck. Probably the purple uniforms.
ReplyDeleteJust by watching his starts, it looks to the eye like Molina struggles when he doesn't have pinpoint control of his fastball. His secondary pitches are okay, but it doesn't look like to me at least he has any really overpowering "out" pitch. The closest is his slider, which seems pretty inconsistent in terms of landing in the strike zone. But he certainly has enough to make him an interesting possibility for a back-of-the-rotation contender next season. I'm just afraid the Giants are going to need more, much more just to make it through the whole season -- presuming there's not a lengthy strike.
ReplyDeleteMolina needs to prove himself over a longer stretch but he was hitting 98 MPH on the FB last night so has something to work with. There are very few pitchers in MLB who can get by without excellent command.
DeleteYeah I wouldn’t count on Molina to be a quality future starting pitcher but he can definitely be a big league arm going forward with the ability to be a swing man who can start or go multiple innings in relief. Molina can be in a Petit-type of role for us. Aroundthefoghorn was saying Tugboat could be good for the Petite role but I truly believe Tugboat can be a big league starter where Molina I definitely don’t see it. Tugboat has the championship big-stage pedigree with the little league World Series and dominating for team Canada. He’s got the dominating minor league track record. He’s still actually quite young, he’s only 23 and will be 24 for all of next year. He’s got great command, great deception, and great pitchability. He’s constantly overlooked because his stuff isn’t elite. But the results have always been there. To my eye he’s David Wells crossed with Kirk Reuter. His pitching windup even looks near identical to Wells. I see Tugboat as a crafty pitcher that won’t ever be a top-end rotation ace but absolutely could be a mid-back rotation mainstay
DeleteI'm a bit mystified how you can be more bullish on a pitcher who barely touches 90 MPH with his FB than one who hits 98 but to each his own.
DeleteThe season appears to be mostly about the retirement of Kruk and Kuip. I really hope there is a meaningful 2027 although the forecast doesn't look good with a lockout likely. There are quite a few promising upstarts in this group and I hope they get to have another full season where the games mean something.
ReplyDeleteI’m more excited about the direction of this team than I have been in at least 10 years. Posey is building something special and taking chances in the meantime. They haven’t worked out for the most part but they haven’t had a negative affect on the future other than a little more $ committed than ideal. Clearly not taking chances like FZ did for 6 years wasn’t working and even though short term success has eluded Posey, the future is brighter than ever. We finally have multiple ligit prospect bats at every position in the minors and all the trades this year and the draft addressed many of the holes we had with pitching in the farm . All we need now is a little patience and adjusted expectations for what success looks like next year. Next year will be like 2009 was or how you remember it now after knowing how 2010 ended up. Not saying we will win the WS in 2028 but if you knew in 09 how 10 and beyond would turn out, how much more would you have appreciated the development of our future stars that year? Appreciate next year as if you know we are winning the WS in 2028.

The combined contracts of Devers, Adames, Chapman is already a huge albatross and will continue to get worse going far into the future9(Jung Hoo Lee was signed by FZ). Again, Buster has done some good things but he's wearing those contracts and will continue to do so.
