Another late-inning disaster turned a close game into a route. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 1 for 4, HR(10). BA= .274. Lee was so good in the middle of the season. Unfortunately despite this HR, he is batting .143 over his last 7 games, .155 over his last 15 and .200 over his last 30.
Scott Bandura DH- 1 for 2, SB(1), R. BA= .250. Bandura scored the Giants second run after a single, SB and a 2-out single by Jonah Cox 2B/CF The SB as a weapon? What a concept!
Cesar Perdomo LHP- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.72. Considering he was facing the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium, this is a pretty good line. Perdomo allowed 3 singles in the 5'th inning but had 2 outs with runners at first and second when Tony Vitello replaced him with Jason Foley RHP. Dave Roberts countered with.....Max Muncy! Not sure I like that matchup but I aws following on Gameday and it looked like Perdomo's velocity was down a couple of ticks so maybe that's what Vitello and the coaches were looking at?
Philip Abner LHP- 1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, 4 HR. ERA= 7.23. Tasked with keeping it close in the bottom of the 8'th inning, Abner gave up 4 home runs, 4! I thought that might be some kind of record but I looked it up and apparently not. 5 HR's in one inning is the record and it's been done many times. My friend texted me and asked who Abner is. I said some random waiver claim. Next!
It doesn't get any easier tomorrow evening as TBD faces Tarik Skubal LHP who may be the best pitcher in MLB and comes in with a 2.70 ERA.
Giants always wanted stolen bases but they could never develop anyone in their minors worth a darn and it’s hard to find quality free agents who can’t steal a base that are worth a darn. Trea Turner was very expensive when he hit the open market
ReplyDeletehttps://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/san-franciscos-40-man-cleanup-will-be-a-giant-pain. Helpful article laying out the upcoming roster crunch/purge/cleansing. And thank you, Mr. Abner, for making one decision a bit easier!
ReplyDeleteTo my quick eyeball test, about 15 players need to be cleaned out. I think the first 11 or so will be easy but when it comes to the last four, it may include some fan favorites.
DeleteWhen you factor in players who need to be added to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft like Bo Davidson and Joe Whitman, I think its at least 17-18 cuts that need to be made.
DeleteVitello has to use the players the GM gives him, no?
ReplyDeleteI just read an article on Fangraphs which was responding to an Alex Pavlovich's post about the task the Giants have to clean up their roster. With 16 players on the IL, they will have a job to make decisions on cutting players. Essentially they have 15 spots with 31 players for those spots. Some easy cuts. Anybody know where the Harrison Bader situation stands? Hope they can cut him without eating the $10M he has on next year's contract. My knowledge on many of the players on the cusp I thin, so I have little idea who to set free.
ReplyDeleteFor all the talk of the dead weight contracts for Chapman and Devers (tho that one is not looking so bad after all) what about JHL, especially with a lot of good-looking young OFs hanging around?
ReplyDeleteThe big salaries for 2027 are unmovable without eating a "fair amount" of what is owed:
ReplyDeleteDevers $33M/yr for 7 years
Adames $31.1M/yr for 5 years
Chapman $25.17M/yr for 4 years
Lee $22.83 for 1 year, plus $21.33 for 2 additional years
Houser $11M for 1 year plus $4M buyout
Bader $10.25M for 1 year (unless the Giants win a release)
Plus Webb whose $23M for 1 year and $24M for 1 additional year is probably the only player of the 7 who is "worth" what he' making.
That totals $156.4M for 2027 for 7 players, leaving less then $100M for the rest of the roster and any FA signings where some real money needs to be spent for 6-to-10 pitchers depending on how much risk Buster is willing to take after a huge 2026 bust on the mound.
You have to be an optimist to think (1) the Giants have or will get what they need to contend in 2027, and (2) there will be a 2027 season.
The Giants are trying to void Bader's contract instead of simply releasing him. The reason we don't hear much about it is because they expect litigation and they don't want to say anything to jeopardize the case. I'm not sure how aggressively the players union will want to defend him if there was surveillance footage. Needless to say, they don't want him back.
ReplyDeleteDo we want to watch Gilbert, Hill, Lee, McCray, and Bericoto in the outfield?
ReplyDeleteOr Davidson? He may be the Real Thing – do we want to see what he can do?
He has some tools but given the team’s emphasis on the hit tool and contact I’m not sure if Grant Mc”K” has a good chance of making the 40 man roster
