Down on the Farm: 6/27/2012

AAA  Reno Aces defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 6-3:

Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 3, HR(1). BA= .233.

Brad Penny(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.40.

Hard to believe this is Dominguez' first HR.  Penny's second 2 inning appearance in a row.  Giants have a decision to make.  It would seem to come down to a choice between Penny and Loux.

AA Reading Phillies beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4:

Mark Minicozzi(1B)- 2 for 4, HR(4), BB.  BA= .301.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .233.

High A  Stockton Ports held off a late rally by the San Jose Giants to win 8-7:

Dashenko Ricardo(C)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .310.
Brennan Metzger(LF)- 0 for 2, BB, 2 HBP.  BA= .320.

Rookie AZL  Giants crushed the Brewers 9-2:

Randy Ortiz(CF)- 2 for 2, 2 BB, 2 SB.  BA= .320.
Hector Mercedes(DH)- 2 for 4.  BA= .360.
Ryan Honeycutt(C)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .400.

  1. Rosin is getting the start tonight in SJ. I like that they are moving him back into the rotation. It's better to pitch him more innings at a time instead of either warming up or pitching every night I think. This kid has great stuff.

    1. I prefer Rosin be developed as a starter too. He can always move back to the pen if that's where the need is, but it's easier to go that way than from the pen back to starting.

  2. DrB, your thoughts about Dodgers signing Yasiel Puig. Here is a BA article critical of it: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2012/2613621.html

My view is that the Dodgers new owners figured that they have a lot of money, lets blow some, just like the Yankees, and if you throw enough money around, the wins will come. That's why they paid such an ungodly amount for the team in the first place.

Unfortunately for them (good for us), but the Yankees have historically not been very good at buying their way to consistent playoff contention. After the Reggie stirring the drink era, they stunk at trying to buy their way until King George was suspended from baseball for illegal political contributions (or something like that), and his baseball people could act without his heavy hand. While he was out, that's when they picked up players like Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Pettitte, which has been the core of their team ever since they made the majors, keeping the team contenders while they added good to great players via free agency, ignoring wasteful spending like Pavano and that Japanese pitcher like they were nothing, as well as over slot bonuses for prospects who don't turn out.

The problem with the "throwing money" strategy is that money is not really the gating factor right now, it is the lack of talent on the free agent market. Now, if they push up salary levels, it might tempt more players to want to wait for free agency, but most players and most teams want to resign, as long as they both feel the salary is fair. Most players are bird in the hand versus two in the bushes type of personalities. Right now, it is basically only Boras's clients who grab for free agency riches. So the Dodgers might raise salaries overall, but it won't help them accumulate talent, which is more important.

    1. I agree with your analysis. A couple of weeks ago the Dodgers announced that they had signed about 20 international prospects obviously trying to get it in before the new spending limits take effect on July 2. It appears that the Dodgers are throwing money and seeing what sticks without any idea of what they are actually spending it on. On the other hand, all they need to get out of that is one star player and the whole "investment" pays off.

  3. DrB what do you think about Mark Hulet's comments on Fangraphs about Gary Brown saying hes gonna be a lower division starter? I personally don't have much respect for Hulet but he knows a lot more about prospects than I do.

    1. What the heck does "lower division starter mean"? The current Giants roster is full of guys who Hulet probably thinks are lower division starters, but they play a vital role on this team which is looking more and more top shelf by the day.

I'll stick with what I've said all along about Gary Brown. He reminds me a lot of a faster Dan Gladden with better D. Well, a Dan Gladden who gives you plus D in CF is a 3-4 WAR player and an excellent return for a #24 draft pick.
