This one got away early as Adrian Houser gave up 8 runs in 4 innings of work and the lineup was not able to catch up. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 3 for 5, RBI. BA= .320. Arraez keeps hitting but the impact of singles hitters is limited by the batters around him in the lineup. Arraez batted second and the #1, 3 and 4 went a combined 1 for 13. If you add in the #5 batter, it was 2 for 17.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 3 for 4, HR(2). BA= .275. Lee continues his hot hitting. Can we please get him and Arraez batting closer together in the lineup?
Eric Haase C- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .333. Once upon a time Haase was one of the more promising young power-hitting catchers. He seems to be back healthy and hitting more like that version of him.
Adrian Houser RHP- 4 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, 4/1 GO/AO). ERA= 7.36. Houser's early season struggles continue but not too surprising given his career history. Note he has a career positive groundball tendency. Thanks to Around the Foghorn for noting that Kruk thinks the ABS Challenge System has caused trouble with sinkerballers by giving batters a point of reference for laying off low pitches and forcing the pitchers to elevate into the strike zone. This was in reference to Logan Webb's early season struggles.
The Loss drops the Giants record to 11-15. They fall 6.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 4 games out of the Wild Card race.
Robbie Ray LHP tries to be the Stopper this afternoon facing Eury Perez RHP.
Morning Doc. I'm still going by what I said on your Blog earlier this month!
ReplyDeleteGonna look at the standing next Friday morning beforemaking any far reaching reflecitve states.
Having said that I when watching the Giants at bats > I often opine > what would Brett Butler have done?
Man on man was he a great Giants even only for 3years > loved watching that Dude at bat!
Hopefully Robby and Landon have solid starts and Tony V listens to you and put Jung Ho to bat 3rd.

Typical Giant Face Plant at home after a bunch of mostly good games. I thought Hauser and Bader were the worst moves of the off season by Buster and neither has done anything to disprove this is what they are.. Hope to be proven wrong! Some glimmers from the lineup...We'll see

Comment from yesterday about the poster wondering if the Giants should move the fences in. Ryan Walker's save would have evaporated as 2 out of three outs he got in the 9th were warning track flyball outs. I like the dimensions of the field as they are. The home team should be able to create an advantage to their own field.
ReplyDeleteOracle Park Field Dimensions:
Left Field Line: 339 feet
Left-Center Field: 399 feet
Center Field: 391 feet
Right-Center Field (Triples Alley): 415 feet
Right Field Line: 309 feet
Keep in mind the dimensions are only part of the environment. Add in wind patterns and the marine layer to understand how the park is going to play on a given day. O those rare hot days at Oracle, the park plays a lot smaller.
I believe the best strategy for success is to have more line drive gap hitters. Try for more doubles and triples than trying to knock the ball out of the park. Here are the leaders on the team in doubles and triples (from Baseball Reference):
Willy Adames alone has 10 doubles
Casey Schmitt has 7 doubles
Matt Chapman has 4 doubles and 1 triple
Luis Arraez has ~1 double and 2 triples
Jung Hoo Lee has 6 doubles
Rafael Devers has 3 doubles and 2 HRs, but is only batting .221 with a staggering 35 strikeouts! His slash line is abysmal. Raffy, it is time to change your approach.

To Adames: what have you done lately?
DeleteWe should not forget that Sandy Alcantara has been a very good pitcher and is recovering from losing the 2024 season with an injury in 2023.
ReplyDeleteHe won the CYA in 2022 with 100% of the vote while his team lost 93 games.
And to Doc's point on the lineup, Adames has completely fallen apart with a 6 game streak of falling numbers as his OBP has dropped daily from .321 to .259 with 5 of 6 games getting no hits and no walks — he has not gotten a walk in the Giants' last 11 games while striking out 19 times.
Can TV handle this problem?
The Studs, Adames and Devers, have hit ONE HR since April 10th, and the Giants are 5-7 in those 12 games.
The two of them occupy half of the top of the lineup, and combine with Bailey to be in the bottom 3 for most of the statistical percentages.
Yeah, sums it up right here. Just can't disappear completely for weeks at a time.
DeleteAdames has history of this, and we shouldn't be all that surprised he's doing it now. Devers, on the other hand. I'm baffled. Did not anticipate him being this godawful (after being more than a bit underwhelming last year). Marlins last night were just challenging him, and he was simply swinging through fastballs.
I would try having Tidwell open for Houser when his turn is up next in the rotation.
