Game Wrap 4/28/2026: Phillies 7 Giants 0

Before we get started, I just want to say I don't think it's fair all the opposing teams in the league have starting pitchers who throw 99 MPH like they are playing catch and the Giants don't.  Ohhkaay then, now that we have that out of the way, Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo came into this game with an ERA of 6.91 and the Giants lineup laid down and died in front of him.  Two baserunners.  That's it.  Tyler Mahle RHP was a gamer for 5 innings but didn't retire anyone in the 6'th and ended up charged with 5 ER.  It didn't matter.  One was too many.  This game was over when the Phils scored on a sac fly in the 4'th inning.  And that is pretty much all there is to day about this game.

  1. Mahle continues his pattern ofalternating between good and bad starts. His won loss record is now 1 win 4 losses ERA.over 5. He pitched better in 2025 for Texas 6 wins 4 losses ERA at 2.18. He's had health issues throughout his career so I hope he's healthy now.and can turn it around. Hate to say it but they're getting what they paid for. They're not going to win with their philosophy of not wanting to pay high end pitchers.

    1. The Giants rank #11 in Team ERA and #29 in Team OPS.

    2. Referring to Houser 5 starts 0 wins 3 losses 7.36 ERA. Mahle 5 starts 1 win 4 losses 5.87 ERA. Mahle has been inconsistent, when bad he's not keeping the team in games, Houser has been bad. Even Webb had some bad games too, doesn't seem right yet. Bullpen has been great. I'm beginning to wonder if hiring Hunter Mense as hitting coach was the right move.i was disappointed they let Pat Burrell go. .Maybe they should hire Barry Bonds as hitting coach. He did so with the Marlins I think.

  2. "The 1908 St. Louis Cardinals hold the MLB record for being shut out the most times in a single season, with 33." Hmmm....

  3. This team has to learn to take walks and play small ball

  4. Chapman strikes out a lot but yesterday was the first time he's struck out 4 times in a game since August 6, 2022. He's played in 505 games since then.
No one else in the lineup, including Devers, Adames, and Ramos, all of whom have struck out more this year than Chapman, struck out more than once except Bailey who K'ed twice.
The nifty 5-3-1 DP the Giants pulled off in the 1st inning (shortly after Chappie's 1st K) was, perhaps, SF's highlight of the game.

  5. 29th in OPS sure seems like the root problem. And further to Doc’s point, it seems like they cannot hit good pitchers that are having average days. Devers needs a rest and some reconditioning . Adames needs to be re-focused. Seems like Chapman has fallen on hard times lately.as well. The list goes on. FP Sentangelo, I think, was saying that when a rookie is playing like those guys, you send him down. When it’s your top paid players on long term contracts, you just keep running them out there and hope that they come out of it. Hopefully they can convince Devers to work hard in the off season to be able to catch-up with 99mph stuff. Right now, he is embarrassing himself. In fairness, he made some nice plays defensively yesterday, but he is paid mostly to hit, and he is not earning his pay right now.

  6. You knew this game was going to happen. The game, and maybe the entire series, was/is a big ambush for the Giants given how poorly a good Phillies team has been playing so far and the managerial change. Hopefully, the Giants can eek out a win the next two games.

  7. If it wasn't for Arraez being on the team it feels like it would only be a matter of time for some average pitcher no hit this lineup

  8. Unless Webb has his best game of the season, as Krukow would say, "The Giants have none chance today!"
