Scouting the 2026 Draft: Tyler Spangler

Tyler Spangler SS, HS.  DOB:  10/1/2007.  B-L, T-R.  6' 3", 195 lbs.

Here is a high school shortstop prospect who could be an under-the-radar pick at #4 for the Giants since he attends De La Salle HS in Northern California where Kyle Harrison went to school.  We know FZ had a strong preference players with local ties.  We don't know for sure if Buster Posey has the same preference.  Spangler is a big shortstop with obvious comps to Corey Seager as do almost all big B-L shortstops.  He has solid tools across the board though none particularly stand out.  He already shows strong plate discipline and power should develop with experience and a maturing frame.

  1. Read a mlb com article saying the scouting industry is excited about the elite level talent at the top of the 2026 draft. It sounds like a good year to have #4 pick in the draft. That UCLA SS Roch Cholowsky had 65 grades on all his tools except arm 45. The draft list has 5 SS out of 1st 11 players ranked. List will change some once season starts. I just want the Giants to pick an elite level talent that can help them within 2-3 years. Not impossible these days Happy New Year!

  2. The Giants make a move!
Lot of upside – potentially a #3, but can Mahle stay healthy?

  3. Mahle is 31 years old, young enough to come back from his injuries. The Reds got 2 good young players back when they traded Mahle to Twins for Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnarsian Strand.. I'm guessing Bruce Bochy gave his blessing since he managed Mahle with the Rangers. The question is have the Giants done enough to upgrade their rotation? They didn't want to spend big on pitching.
