The final list will wait until after January 2 to make sure Luis Hernandez in fact signs with the Giants as expected. In the meantime I'll post a preliminary list and ask for comments and recommendations. In the past, feedback from reader/commenters produced changes in the list, so please make your voice heard. My only requests are 1. Keep the flamethrowers locked up. It's preliminary list and as always please don't get too hung up on exact order. The main goal of the exercise is to get better acquainted with the Giants farm system and the players who are part of it. 2. Please include your reasoning behind your recommended changes. A well reasoned recommendation will always get stronger consideration for the final list.
This is not an easy list. It's fairly easy to identify a top 6 or 7 but after that, it's almost like you could put about 40 names in a hat and draw them at random along with the usual tensions between long term ceiling and proximity to the major leagues.

I have selected 3 names of individuals who you/your page of discussed in the past, but for me my 3 I think are very intriguing. I have no special skills or special knowledge > more gut in my approach.
So #1 Blake Tidwell > #2 Parks Harber and #3 > the Winnipeg connection Dayson Croes > guy can just plain hit at any level.
Any thoughts but no boos please.

Well, at least I have them in the right order. I really struggled with Croes. He doesn't have much of a pedigree and I can't find much of a scouting report but the hit tool seems very legit. Should I move him up? How high?

ReplyDeleteAhuna is still in the organization. I just don't see him making much progress on the issues that showed up his senior year in college. Admittedly a small sample but his Arizona Fall League season was nothing to write home about. I'll will give due consideration but I'm not sure I see any guys in the current list I would bump off for him.

ReplyDeleteMartin had a short burst of power midseason in A ball but otherwise had another dismal season. The organization has gotten a lot deeper and Walker has not found any significant traction. Probably Honorable Mention at this point with opportunity to move back into the list next year if he can show some progress.

ReplyDeleteThere are a couple intriguing possibilities on there: Will Kiley have an invite to the MLB camp? It could ruin his development or it could give him an opportunity to show what he can do. He is a very high draft pick for a 2B and Tony V, I’m sure, will see his upside.
Parks Harbor is another curious possibility. We show him at 1B/3B. Would it be too hard to see him at 2B? Especially if his hit tool plays in the show? Kiley and Harbor competing with Schmitt for the 2B slot? Best hitter sticks with the big club and Wash is tasked with improving their D?
One other curious piece here is Bo Davidson vs. Drew Gilbert. Gilbert struggled a bit with his MLB hitting and, though he is aggressive as heck on D, I’m not sure I see him as a super strong defender. (Kuip’s comment of “Drew Gilbert loves to see Drew Gilbert throw” from the outfield , caught my ear). He may be a lot of noise but not as much signal. So, do we think Bo Davidson going to be the better outfielder at the big league level?

Now he's in DFA Limbo – a place you don't want to be at this "holiday" time of year as Doc recently pointed out, and described on December 24th in MLBTR, listing Meckler, Joey Wiemer, and 8 others including former Giant Marco Luciano.

ReplyDeleteI think Luis de la Torre LHP deserves to be higher up on the list, for me he's likely to reach the majors faster AND be more impactful than OF Carlos Gutierrez, and maybe also a faster mover and more impactful than catcher Jesus Rodriguez.
ReplyDeleteFrom videos and his stats page, I think he's got a higher ceiling than all 3 of Wisenhunt, Seymore or McDonald. With his size he may end up a reliever, in which case I'll also say he's got the attitude and aggressiveness to be a future CLOSER. It's a critical position to develop!!
I was really impressed by De La Torre when I saw him pitch and liked him even more after I read his scouting report. Will definitely take another look at him.

The only difference I can see in the ACL vs SJ stat line is his GO/AO went up in SJ. Is that pitching environment or did he rely on his 2-seam more? I saw him on July 24 @IE and in the middle of 3 scoreless starts and he looked really impressive.
DeleteIt might have been from before he was promoted out of A-Augusta, because when I take a look at his stats game-by game as Anon said above, Luis DLT's WHIP goes from 1.33 through 8 games with low-A (out of 10) on June 27, to going the rest of the season (18 starts/appearances) carrying a 0.83 WHIP, mostly in SJ. That's pretty wild, it's impressive that he just got more and more dominant as the season went on, even moving up a level. I know he was a force in the playoffs for SJ as well.

I like De La Torre a lot, but is he a better prospect than Keyner Martinez who BA says has the both the best fastball and slider in the entire system? Or Argenis Cayama who is bigger, younger and essentially the same level? I think it's a great signt for the system that the Giants have a prospect like De La Torre who we are trying to find a way to move above #20.

ReplyDeleteI am lower on Dakota Jordan than most other analysts. Just not sure the body type translates that well to baseball and not sure the muscular frame can stay out of muscle strains.
