Game Wrap 4/29/2025: Padres 7 Giants 4

The Giants habit of falling behind early caught up with them as they were not able to overcome a subpar start by Logan Webb.  Key Lines:

Willy Adames SS- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2), 2 R, RBI.  BA= .212.  I think this was Adames' most productive game of the season so far.  He has hit in 6 of his last 7 games with a .280 BA so he may starting to positively regress to his mean.

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI.  BA= .118.  LMWJ's oppo field double in the 6'th inning narrowed the gap to 5-4.

Logan Webb RHP- 5 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, 5/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 2.83.  Webb was clearly not as sharp as his last start, especially out of the stretch.  But as you might suspect from his line, there was some pretty serious negative BABIP luck going on here.  Statcast data seems to confirm this as 8 of the top 13 Exit Velocities and 8 of 15 EV's > 100 MPH were off Giants bats.

Landen Roupp RHP tries for a split of the 2-game series tomorrow afternoon facing Michael King RHP in another tough pitching matchup.

  1. Uncharacteristic games for Webb and Randy Rodríguez: 1st runs scored against the latter in 12 appearances, giving up a questionable HBP before the HR with 2 outs.
Could have been a different outcome.

  2. Interesting about the game: SF was favored by the betting sites but the overwhelming bet was on SD.
Given the way the Giants squeak out games, the Padres were a great bet with +1½ runs!

    1. I'm not a betting person but I would have take the Padres too. They are a better team on paper playing at home and Pivetta came in hot. Was it because Webb was starting for the Giants?

    2. not today, SD is a solid favorite.
Yes, it was probably because of Wade but Nick Pivetta is no slouch: SD has won his last 4 starts. He has gotten the decision in all 6 starts this season — only one was a dud (Cubs), and he got the loss. 3 of the other 5 were shutouts.

  3. We need to get in the Padres heads a bit, don't resort to fighting but, a little chippiness wouldn't hurt.

  4. Are the Giants doing Matos (or themselves) any favors by languishing him on the bench? Or helping themselves? He's 2 for 28 since his 2-hit game in Houston, 1 for his last 24, and had his first strikeouts of the season (3) in his last 4 games.
Perhaps more the fault of the Giants against LHP, but SF has lost 5 of Matos' last 7 starts (all against LHP).
Rather than playing Matos against LHP, the Giants could play Villar and Koss at 1B/2B and move Fitzgerald to the OF leaving Lee as the only LHB (whose splits he hits LHP better than RHP!).
