The Giants overcame a rough start by Blake Snell to win in a walk-off . Key Lines:
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(17). BA= .300. Fitz led off the 9'th inning with a single, Stole 2B and scored on Patrick Bailey's ground rule double for the walk-off win.
Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .233. Bailey drove in all 3 Giants runs with a 2-out, 2-run single in the 4'th inning and the walkoff double in the 9'th. He is 4 for 9 over his last 3 games.
Blake Snell LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.62. I let out a gasp when I saw that Snell came out after 1 IP in the boxscore, but Melvin most likely made the move because Snell threw 42 pitches in the inning which was extended by Tyler Fitzgerald's throwing error. From looking at the Play Log, it's not clear to me why both runs weren't unearned. Perdomo scored on Fitzgerald's throwing error and Corbin Carroll scored on a Strike Out/Passed Ball.
Landon Roupp RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.41. Great long relief job by Roupp who should be in line for a SP or long RP role next season.
Ryan Walker RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.88. Walker gets credit for the W(9-3) and what a season he's had!
The Giants travel to San Diego for a weekend series with Mason Black RHP starting tomorrow evening against Michael King RHP.
FWIW, just read Doc's 5 Bold Predictions for 2024 from Thursday, March 28, 2024 and all the commenter predictions:
ReplyDeleteNot much came to fruition, but what's most interesting is:
1. everyone was upbeat
2. commentators were happy with FZ's acquisitions
3. we were looking forward to 2024 with play off expectations
4. weren't any "shoulda's" — for example, there weren't any "Fire FZ's"
Remember Dinah Washington's "What a difference a year makes" song?
OK, it was a day, not a year, but hindsight is always better !
Going into the 2024 season, I really liked the look of the Giants team. Injuries completely derailed the expectations. Getting little to nothing from Snell in the first half, Tristian Beck and Keaton Winn going down. Alex Cobb was supposed to be back in May, if not April, proved to be a non-factor before getting traded. Hope for reinforcement after the All-Star break with Robbie Ray did not come to fruition enough to really change the tide of the season. I know injuries are a part of the game but because all of these events (among others) did occur, there is now a strong push to fire FZ. As if all of this was predictable. I think that is an over-the-top reaction. So many players coming from the farm system establishing themselves is a huge positive sign for the future. I am glad they were able to resign Chapman, who is not a star, but a solid baseball player to build around.
ReplyDeleteDepending on injured players coming back by a certain date might be a bit presumptuous on FZ's part but the basic gist is true. Beck had a freak injury and I don't think anybody saw Snell's faceplant coming. It also seemed like he was counting on Marco Luciano's readiness to take over SS and didn't have a back up plan. Also, there was, ahem, letting Joey Bart go in favor of oft-injured Tom Murphy might have been a mistake too. Another one of those seasons where everything that could go wrong did but there were some areas where the bold decisions didn't have quite enough of a back up plan.
DeleteAgree with you Doc. It comes down to if a team has enough players having career years and good luck with injuries, the team should be a winning team for the season. Signing a star player like Chapman is a great way to start their off-season. A 6 year contract up to age 37 seems long but you gotta do it if you want the player. The padres extended Machado for 11 years up to his age 41 season. I could be wrong but its close to that. I think FZ needs to articulate to fans at the end of the season his short term plan as to how the Giants can take the next steps to contend. A constructive criticism I have of FZ is while he's a very smart person, the messaging especially in regards to the direction of the team has been unclear at times.
