Game Wrap 9/19/2024: Orioles 5 Giants 3

The Giants came up empty on several scoring opportunities and Ryan Walker gave up a walk-off loss in a non-save opportunity.  Key Lines:

Jerar Encarnacion DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .261.  Is Jerar a candidate to be next season's DH?

Michael Conforto LF- 2 for 4, HR(18).  BA= .234.  Conforto is putting on a late season surge but it's likely way too little, too late.  He's a free agent and highly unlikely to resign with the Giants.

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .293.  One of his hits was a nice bunt single in the second inning to put runners at first and second with no outs.  Unfortunately Patrick Bailey GIDP to kill the rally.

Casey Schmitt 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .226.  Schmitt continues to have better looking PA's this time up.

Donovan Walton 2B- 0 for 4.  BA= .118. Rough day for Walton as he tried two sac bunts and struck out  and popped up.

Marco Luciano IF- DNP.  Marco did not make a single appearance during the 3-game series.  The fact that he is on the active roster and collecting pine splinters in his butt suggests to me that FZ and Bob Melvin are not reading off the same page.

Logan Webb RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.58.  Webb looked better than his last start and got through the first 3 innings without giving up a run.  That's usually a good omen for him but after the Giants took a 2-0 lead in the 4'th inning he gave it back with a 3-spot for the O's.  2 of the Orioles 3 hits in the inning were groundball singles.

Taylor Rogers LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.53. Taylor Rogers seems to be in the doghouse but he's secretly had a pretty good season.  A few too many walks and maybe a HR or two too many? Maybe a bit overpaid?

Spencer Bivens RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.89.  Bivens seems to have put himself in the mix for a middle/multi-inning relief role next season.

The Giants move open a weekend series against the Royals tomorrow evening with Mason Black RHP facing veteran Michael Wacha RHP.

  1. time to call it a season for logan webb, let either carson ragsdale or seymour a cup of coffee in the final and protect them from rule 5.

    1. Webb is 4 outs shy of his second consecutive 200 innings season.

  2. Maybe the best thing for Luciano is for the organization to convert him to an outfielder? It doesn't look like its gonna work for him as an infielder. Its time for the Giants to decide the best position for Luciano to play, and give him reps in the minors if they have to.

  3. Well..Walker finally had to have a hiccup! But what a stretch and what a year!!!!... Giants played hard this series, took 2 of 3, and i tip my hat for not quitting when the ship has sunk.

That said, it boggles my mind while players that men nothing now or in the future like Conforto, Walton, Canha, even Wisley continue to get ABs. While I am at it, I could probably throw in 2 of the 3 of Wade, Yaz and Encarbacion,, all three just role players and likely only one will be a Giant next year.

Furthermore, Melvin has no use for guys like Lucianno and Matos, is done with Doval. Melvin seems to be of the old school where he prioritizes character and grit and guys that have beat odds yet are nothing but journeymen or part timers now. Sorry, that is not what builds you a PO team. Talent does and trying to get the best out of your talented youngsters does. Play them, teach them, use them and not falling back to "grit" when they struggle.

  4. Walker is being over used and Bevins is being under used.

  5. FZ’s mismanagement of Luciano this year should be enough for him to be fired. The kid needs ABs, yet he keeps sitting in the bench! It doesn’t matter if Melvin is making the decision — don’t call him up if he isn’t going to play!
